Hide Your Barbies-- There's a New Girl In Town! Is it an homage to Christina Ricci, or a hydrocephalic astronaut caught in an airlock?
  • It's a 70's resurgent. Kenner originally released them in the US around 1972 but only made them for two years. They were kind of underground collectors things for a while and then it seems that they've been slowly regaining popularity since about 1997. They became popular in Japan in 2001 when the department store chain PARCO started using them in their advertising (this is why I know what they are. this also helped). Seems their popularity bust in Japan is spilling back over to the States.
  • Gracias, amigo mio!
  • At last -- a dolly that makes Barbie look good! Cartoon idollity? Anyway, a grotesque quality in both.
  • Oh, dear God, keep it away from me! She looks like a friggin' psychopath! (Note to self: Things NOT to buy for my daughter.)
  • NOTICE: Please step this way for voluntary cultural euthanasia.
  • Kill it kill it kill it quick! Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  • I thought Barbie had already been superseded ?
  • That thing is seriously freaky. Or, if it's a 70s doll, I guess freak-ay. The site is really funny though. Good post!
  • Okay, poking around it some more - you have to check out the postcards page. I'm laughing my ass off here and can't decide which hideous pose to send to my husband. Hee.
  • They're actually a bit Mark Ryden, don't you think?
  • These are terrifying and adorable. I absolutely have to own one.
  • Plegmund: I hadn't consciously made the connection, but YES--Ryden is right on the money (and one of my FAVE artists)!!! Well played !
