Clever Monkey: Dropload Clever Monkey: Dropload is a deceptively simple free utility with almost limitless potential: 50 megs of space that you are allowed to use to drop off a file. Your account name is your email; when someone drops off a file, you're alerted by email and can decide if you want to download. Anonymous dropoff is allowed and although the potential for negative mischief is there, the greater potential is that you can receive little gifts from a circle of e-friends all day long! Used intelligently, with discretion and the occasional donation, this could be the start of something great in terms of communication for those of us that have had to rely on small and restrictive freebie email accounts to send and recieve information.

I was thinking that since we'd had quite a few internet/computer/utility/blog questions lately that we could classify them under a common rubrick separate from the one-a-day FPPs. What do ya'll think? You like the idea? And how about that dropload, eh? Killer ap, especially when it comes to that monkeyswap music concept. I'd love to dropload tracks with you guys if you're amenable. My email is in my profile; let me know.

  • Not so clever monkey with that title though...
  • This could be super useful. Thank you!
  • seems like a very interesting concept.. especially considering the limits of free email. I've been tinkering around with YouSendIt recently. Same kind of concept expect that you don't have to sign up ahead of time. I think the Clever Monkey idea is a good one. Seems reasonable enough to seperate things out so that it would be easier to find all the interesting threads if you're searching, just like Curious George.
  • It's good and all, how long before they get sued for facilitating MP3 swapping?
  • Actually I thought I read in their T&C that using this for copyrighted materials, but maybe I'm thinking of another similar service. Regardless, I wouldn't use this for sensitive materials - there are no details about their privacy policy or anything.
  • with gmail's 1 gig limit this seems like it'll be quickly outmatched.
  • Ah - I found it. From Acceptable Use Remember that you are using our server to drop files off for your friends, so we ask that you store things we wouldn't mind storing for you. Things we would not appreciate: child porn or copyrighted materials that you aren't permitted to share in this manner. Also - tomorrow I will get a peek at GMail. I'll be sure to tell you all about it.
  • Oh, IgnorantSlut, how did you manage that? I would love to have a peek too.. /wink, nudge
  • Gyan: trust me, I just about made a fool of myself trying to get in on the deal as well. I'm still trying to work the angle.
  • *sigh* entered my email twice on the gmail site, and no replies from Google yet. /off-topic I've sent links of both Dropload and YouSendIt to my friends. Now we can start exchanging stuff *rub hands* - only my friend's personally created music of course, not copyrighted material (well, he's the copyright owner). *angelic look*
  • YouSendIt is smooth. Thanks bah!
