Weightless Animals. Sonic space cartoons. Made from meetings with astronauts and NASA archives by Mandy McIntosh, Kaffe Matthews and Zeena Parkins, programming by Simon Yuill. (Flash, but beautiful. Needs sound, too)

What is the soundtrack for space? Here is one answer, from three female artists who made a field trip to Houston and took two years to construct this response. We are three people who make work from our surroundings. We chose space because it is the ultimate surrounding and because we love the glamour of the human attempts to navigate it.Our work is made from samples and improvisations, visually and sonically. We interviewed astronauts, hung out with a mission controller and a rocket scientist. Then we spent a long time on line gathering raw stuff. The diary of their days at NASA is excellent, too. The soundtrack is available, although only on vinyl. (via this months edition of The Wire)

  • Where do I find the cartoons on the site?
  • Click on "To Space". Then click on either high or low (in the top right corner), depending on your bandwidth requirements, I suppose. They aren't really cartoons though (is that what you meant?)...
  • I love the aesthetic of the drawings. Great find.
  • Really interesting work. Good post.
  • All visuals are by Mandy McIntosh, her website is www.hamandenos.com/
  • Cheers Bagpuss. (Her website was down when I posted this, which was why I didn't include it.)
