There is grumbling in the glens over one company's efforts to introduce a 'new' kind of whisky.
A deal has now been reached though.
I was going to put together a post on this, but the Guardian did a better job than me. Also see this recent metafilter post on Scotland's recent whisky troubles.

This is good news. It may seem like a tempest in a teapot to people who aren't single-malt drinkers, but the thought of blurring the concept of "single malt" by creating a blended version is anathema to those of us who are. Sort of like "open marriage" -- it just doesn't work.

I was worried when I first read this... I thought Cardhu single malt was being discontinued! It's become my favourite malt lately, with it's sweet aromas and clean finish. I'd cry if it ever went away. BTW, always drink single malts straight up or mixed with a little water - never with ice.

always drink single malts straight up or mixed with a little water - never with ice. My first draft of this post contained a story - once, a few years ago, I happened to put ice in a glass of whisky and my flat mate, a whisky obsessive, looked so fucking disgusted, and simultaneously embarrassed for me, that I have never ruined a glass with ice again. I've always wondered what he would have doneif he'd come in seconds later and noticed me mixing it with coke. I reckon he would have punched me. Or cried. Or both, maybe.
