Because why not?
After many stalled attempts at rewriting the Mofi website from scratch, we have a test Mofi for your perusal! It uses the current MoFi database and has all past posts and comments, but from this point stores posts separately, so you can play around with it as much as you want. Please note any errors, bugs, and other issues. Any features you see lacking, say so in a comment. This is a very basic version right now and other features will come over time (e.g. A "bananas"/I like this button).
You'll be jumping for joy when you realise you can see all homunculus' old posts and comments!
-
I checked to see how the M.O.N.K.E.Y. Game thread looks and immediately noticed an issue that I ASSUME you will address... there are no links to specific comments (in fact the "X ago" timestamp for comments in a thread refers to the date of the original post... but in the User Comments pages, the datestamp is correct). But will the "Recent Comments" sidebar be part of the ultimate design? It IS my favorite feature (and probably most of the other surviving users'). Well, you wanted bug reporting, said the spider to the fly...
-
Yep, the sidebar with recent comments/posts will be included (but requires coding from scratch since we've shifted from PHP to Python). Thanks for the heads-up about the comment links. #2 is looking at the timestamps now. Lucky guy.

Interesting
-
Yes to the bananas up!
-
Facebook has Likes, but no Unlikes, making it seem weird to stamp Like on a really bad thing, even if it is an interesting post - and people have said as much from time to time with no effect. Therefore an empty black banana skin, pointing up squidlike, might serve to one-up them over here, should a slick (or slippery) design be offered for that by Foop or someone. <;(!)
-
May I offer Dan Folkus a banana?
-
Or have the banana peel with a picture of a foot about to step on it?
-
The Facebook thing with likes is weird. I like the way they're used on mefi, where it's either to approve of something or to tag it for future ease of access, in case you want to revisit it, so more of an in-site bookmark. Maybe we should name it and use it thusly?
-
Facebook, and everything to do with it, sucks. But that is just myyyy opinion.
-
I think #2 added the ability last night to edit your bio Page in the test site. It's getting closer to being as usable as this one. But faster and more reliable.
-
I like that it's also deeper in member's posting histories. Mayhap a way can be found for self editing though? Thus no longer viable or failed links or posts with borked links, or doubles could be swept under the rug? Not to mention teh misspellings...
-
Déjà vu
-
Déjà vu
-
Look, ^ it's déjà vu all over again!
-
Is there a plan to link to the original threads on the "all posts by" section on the user pages? As it now stands, the links are mostly dead. Also, it only shows 4 of however many posts a user made.
-
Hi path! How are you? It's so good to see you here again. I'm not sure what you mean - it sounds to me like what you're asking is what we have put in place. Are you looking at the test site, e.g. my links page? Dan Folkus, it took me a while to figure out the deja vu part. I am slow today.
-
So we are happy, I think, with the basic state of the test Mofi page. What will happen next is a beta release where we'll slowly bring in extra functionality and make sure it works as we go. That's the part when you get to request all the ponies you can dream up. So Dan, we can look at a time-limited self edit at that stage. That's also when the sidebar will make a reappearance.
-
A tickin' time bomb gives us some leeway. Cool!
-
Oooh we might just get some of the Old Ones back here...
-
I'd be happy to see some of our old gang back again (or coming out of lurk mode) but never open the door to the Old Ones.
-
I'm not an Old One, I am a Chronologically Enhanced One. And if you disagree, then get off my virtual lawn.
-
I am ok with change, as long as I can still find the post about Indian toilets.
-
Hello? Is this the domain for sale November 26th?
-
Wait, they even have a 'way back' machine to check anything we ever said right here.
-
Well, it only has snapshots, but a pretty good sampling of posts and comments over the years.
-
Oh, but Whois actually says monkeyfilter is not set to be expired until 2015... *Whew*
-
Way to go Dan, first you make me think my habitat is disappearing, and then you tell me the playground is set to close in 2015. *flings*
-
Nah, it's set to automagically renew every time it's due. No panic monkeys!
-
Buggy code on the test site; #2 says "some type of leak" causes it to shut down after half a day. We need to do some work. FYI it is not Fukushima.
-
It...leaks? What does it leak? MAN THE PUMPS Although a very niche whistleblowing site called monkeyleaks.com would be epic.
-
Ominous that it's approaching sentience...
-
Okay. I had a long holiday where I did zilch on anything ever anywhere. But hey: * we renewed the domain, of course (goes without saying). I was too late in my research to move to a different domain register, so at some point we might shift which would cause a very short blip in site accessibility. * the test.monkeyfilter.com site is looking pretty tidy and runs reliably just now. We need you guys to use it, to try to break it and report any problems (by posting them there or here or emailing me). Key points, aka tl;dr: use the test site, try to wreck it. Have fun!
-
PS if the test site is good, then we will make the switch asap. Partly this is a cost issue -- we are paying for a virtual machine right now but if we switch over then we can move to local server which is essentially free. The other reason is because yay! New Mofi! Then all the extra features will be added (including yes of course the sidebar do you think we hate you). PS we still need someone to prettify it, all you design people...
-
I could think of no better way to test the new MoFi than with a fork of the Everlasting Blogstopper Game... ain't I a stinker?
-
I've posted a couple of new posts there, but I'm still posting comments/links in old threads here since the sidebar isn't there yet. It seems to be working okay.
-
Actually, wait. Is the title supposed to be displayed on the page? Because all I see under the date is the url description.
-
The title was always on the sidebar, not on the front page itself.
-
So we have resolved the last notable issue which was the timestamps. Any other problems that haven't been reported? Speak now or forever hold your peace until the next time I ask. If so, then the next step is to write the sidebar code and then we'll shift it over here! Exciting!
-
Hmm, where's my bananas up/rotten bananas feature? A mildly moldy banana is fine. We're all adults here, no need to fling.
-
If You Give A Monkey A Banana, You’re Actually a Terrible Enabler
-
The title was always on the sidebar, not on the front page itself. Okey dokey. I wasn't sure if that was meant to change to be like MeFi or stay the same.
-
As it stands at the moment we're keeping the look and basic features the same. I hadn't actually thought about including the title on the front page, but if that's something people want I bet it would be easy to do. Let me know! If I get enough "yes" answers, then we'll do it.
-
Actually, I prefer it the way it is now, just in the sidebar. Titles would clutter the front page.
-
If You Give A Monkey A Banana, You’re Actually a Terrible Enabler That does it, homunculus, no favorites for you!
-
:(
-
Say tracicle, would you like us to hold off making new posts until the migration or is it just business as usual? And will the FPPs I posted on test.monkeyfilter.com migrate over here or should I repost them?
-
No, carry on! It will take some time to do the sidebar, especially since #2 now has his own special project, something involving a radio-controlled car and leaving the house every day to "test" it...
-
Okey dokey. But should I repost the FPPs I posted on test.monkey here, or will they migrate here on their own with the new site?
-
TracALERT! Can we please get the new test.monkey link for the M.O.N.K.E.Y. game linked in on the sidebar? It doesn't show when there's a new entry, and how can we keep going fast and furious? Pleeze and thenku. Love, Granma
-
Sure. Just...not instantly.
