Cryptogams and the NSA
As an attorney at Human Rights Watch who had worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan, John Sifton knew he was on a short list for NSA surveillance. So he gave the snoopers something to read by emailing himself passages from Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Not a good idea. The worst part was when the Special Prosecutor asked him "why would someone write like this?”

I don't really understand why he just didn't admit his attempted ruse and show them the Joyce quotes right off the bat. I also don't understand why after they knew this that it rose to the level of indictment.
