MeFI selectively open
  • Anyone here who got in? Does that mean we'll miss you?
  • come on in, guys!!! : > finally! (and this is how i got in in july02--it took me a few tries.
  • Oh yea, Gyan, why don't you go ahead and announce it to the world. Bet you got in *before* you posted this, didn't you? It'll be all your fault if a bunch of Monkeys have sprained bananas tomorrow noon. But wait, I'm not bitter. You guys have been good to me, and I'll stay a true-blue baboon for you.
  • I'm setting my alarm clock for 4:45 am so that I can make a rush at the gates (what's up with noon PST?). Actually, maybe I won't. MetaFilter is getting lame lately. I don't think this thread would have faired so well over there. I still wouldn't mind having an account but I think I prefer my poo flinging to be in the form of [flings poo].
  • aw! give it a shot, anyway--we've nudged matt for so long about opening it up again.
  • For the first time in months I clicked the New Member link today and at the time it was still "Sorry - we're closed".
  • If you don't come over to the blue, I won't be able to fling poo at you! That won't be any fun. Thus endeth my first monkeyfilter comment. I'd like to thank the academy, my mom, and the Dark Lord Baal.
  • BlueHorse, I just found out (I'm not in). I don't expect to get in for another week at least (I'll certainly try).
  • What time is 12 noon Pacific in UTC or GMT? I know how to convert from GMT.
  • 8 PM UTC
  • err.. GMT, don't know UTC
  • You know what, I just hate think about hanging out there at noon less nanoseconds and finding out that everyone else got there first. I can understand the meta-Matt's reasons for not just opening it up for everyone, but there's something in me which resists a lottery.
  • A lottery is still better than any other option that was proposed. But would I really want to put my links there? That would mean fewer links for monkeyfilter - and I feel like I owe this community now. (Owe in a good way, of course.)
  • ah, bummer...there is no way Ill be able to make that, besides the fact that I would have to be awake at 5 am, I dont have internet at home, and there are no open internet cafes. Not to mention: 5am.
  • That's it
  • lkc - perhaps someone in a better time zone can help you? If you leave information with someone you trust, they could try.
  • they can pry my monkeyfilter feed from my cold, dead hands.
  • jb, meet The World Clock Meeting Planner. And lkc, I'll be trying at 5 am. Maybe I could try and get lkc for you. Actually, how's about some better geographically positioned monkeys volunteering to help us folks in Asia out? I'd like mexican for my username, please. Help me out and I'll tell you a secret.
  • Yea, post yer good linkies HERE first. Let the cranky MeFi people take leftovers. Umm, tasty, tasty leftovers. Stavros, does that mean you won't throw poo on the lavender? Promise?
  • I'm pretty happy over here, thanks.
  • if there's a monkey who won't have access at noon tomorrow, you can email me with your preferred username and password and i'll do my best for you. my email is in my profile. i'm 100% trustworthy but better than that i'll probably forget what your password was anyways, as i have too many of my own to remember, doh.
  • And, Amberglow, you're the best! (cue song.) And languagehat is the only on who can make me smile when he trashes my theories. And I miss Dizzy, but homunculus, t r a c y, tracicle, mexican, bluehorse, sullivan, gyan, well, everyone here helps make up for that. Is this our first group hug?
  • Bluehorse, Stavros throw poo? I don't think so. Wonderchickens are always welcome. And there's just one wonderchicken.
  • Hmm. After all this time in MoFi, I wonder why I wanted to get on the blue in the first place. I think I'll stay here, it's more comfy.
  • Is this our first group hug? Not quite. I feel rather torn. Two months ago I would have jumped at the chance to join MeFi, even if it means staying up till 4am (...uggh). But now...hmm. I like it here. Alot. *Hugs everybody*
  • Monkeyfilter has been great. I'll probably look in tomorrow (it's 4pm my time, which is handy) but really, just because I have a big mouth and sometimes I really want to comment. Best answer would probably be to give up on MeFi and keep hanging with the monkeys. That's probably what'll happen in the long run, if I don't get in.
  • I'm with Alnedra. As long as MoFi stays active, I can't be arsed getting up early or reloading endlessly at work...
  • Carousel! Carousel!
  • Ah, am I the only one who got an audio thing on the link with 2 guys talking? I don't think I'm hallucinating, but I haven't been able to recreate the experience.
  • It would have been a nice gesture in a Big Brother kind of way if Matt had offered Monkeys a non-lottery shot at the Blue. I'll probably give the lottery a try. Just so that when I have that comment that I absolutely have to share, I can, instead of staring mutely at the screen. Although, now that I'm faced with it, I'm not sure if I'll keep this name, which seemed clever for about half a second when I signed on and which, as soon as it was official, I realized I hated... Furthermore! I also offer my services to Monkeys who will be sleeping with the doors briefly open. Just send names and passwords to the email address in my profile. And, hey, any suggestions of names for ME would be appreciated!
  • I like having dual citizenship.
  • The lottery (i thought of it more as a "Beat the Clock" thing) was how signups were last opened in the summer of '02...I guess Matt was happy with that experience, so decided to repeat it. I think you guys should give it a shot, and you're ahead of the game anyway, with this. : >
  • In a month, thats 600 newbies, all raring to post. I wonder how bitter the MeFiers will get by then. It seems like part of the 'charm' of the place is the familiar characters, everyone knowing each other's quirks and sharing inside jokes. All that chatty new blood is going to make anyone with an ID over 17000 persona non grata - just watch.
  • I trust that you'll act in a civilized manner, that you'll treat others with opposing viewpoints with absolute respect, that you'll contribute in a positive way to the intelligent discussions that take place here everyday. Did anyone else find this as amusing as I did? And yes, it looks like I need to eat my words. (Except for the part about being happy here!) Certainsome1, I know what you mean about choosing a user name. Part of me feels like I should stick with Sooooz for continuity but I also think I could come up with something better. You know, if I decided to join and all that.
  • Group Hug. Group Hug. Group Hug. Grope. Hug. Hey, Wendell, Petebest, Goetter, Frogs, STOP THAT! Wolof! Flashboy! Ah, man, com'on you guys, take it back to that other thread, will ya? Can you feel the love tonight? la la la Path, see what you started?
  • Cheers Alnedra & FancyPants, I'm with you. The MoFi is a very fine place to be. Stavros, please stop by anytime and fling your chicken droppings about. A little cross-species chaos is good for everyone.
  • *grabs hose, aims it at Path and BlueHorse*
  • In a month, thats 600 newbies, all raring to post. I wonder how bitter the MeFiers will get by then. Only a very few people were especially nasty to us when we were new (and some of them are now gone). And you 17kers will get to fling poo at the even-newer 20kers.
  • Bwahahahahahaha! I exist on the same coastline as mathowie, and thus the same time zone. I shall enter 20 new usernames at noon everyday, thwarting you all! *runs off in search of 20 other types of berries to use as names*
  • Salmonberry: Actually, that's not a half-bad idea. Sell the IDs on E-bay. I'll take a 20% commission for that idea, thank ye kindly. And now I am officially on the no-way-no-how-uh-uh blacklist on MeFi.
  • "I swear it honey, already planned to start sleeping at least 6 hours a day... but, you see, they opened Meta again! Hello? Hello...?"
  • While I am extremely fond of Mofi and shall maintain this be my first and most frequent stop, I have been waiting far too long not to at least try to get into Mefi. It is the only site (before Monkeyfilter) that could keep me up till dawn the next day. And that's with two small children to take care of. I am sure my efforts will be futile and that the possibility remains that this is a cruel April Fool's joke, but I will succumb and see what happens.
  • Fuck that, and fuck Mefi. There's way too much whining, bitching, and general cattiness; ie, "Stop crapping in the threads!", "This isn't Newsfilter!", "You are misusing AskMeta!", etc. Meffies need to fucking relax and lighten up a bit. And, I'm probably the only one with the balls to say it, but I wonder if mathowie himself isn't part of the problem... by running the place like a middle school vice principal, the dynamics inevitably regress to such a denominator; complete with all the one-upsmanship, incessant bellyaching, tattling, pettiness, and caustic sassiness of prepubescence. Granted, it's not as lame as Fark, but come on... there's no need to clamor in line at the soup kitchen lottery when a superior alternative already exists. But if you insist, at least take a fatty blunt with you to pass around over there so those guys can chill the fuck out.
  • And with that, Wedge's chances at getting confirmed for MeFi membership evaporated away.
  • Wow, I just signed up for MoFi only about two days ago and now MeFi is (sort of) open? I don't know what to do now.
  • My first instinct when I saw that new memberships were open was "Whee!!! I can FINALLY join." But now...it seems less relevant. I honestly don't think I would dare ever comment there, much less post, thanks to the amount of snarking and self-policing/bitching that has become common activity there. I'll stick to Mofi thankyouverymuch. When the poo hits my face I know it's genuine and meant in a good way. did I mention I'm kinda drunk...but I still feel the love here, plain and simple.
  • I've been lurking here for about a month and MeFi for the better part of a year. Just signed up to full-fledged primate today and now this. I'll try for a shot at the blue, but I've come to like the poo too.
  • Lovin' that link, homunculus.
  • I enjoyed introducing the phrase "John Bonham is a monster" to Metafilter yesterday, at least.
  • Wait, is this the April Fools joke?
  • Mmmm... ... Nah. I'm with Wedge on this one.
  • I dunno, if you think Metafilter's bad, you should see most of the computer game forums I (occasionally) visit.
  • Fuck that, and fuck Mefi. Is that really necessary? How many of our members are dual citizens? A quarter? A third? Need I say more?
  • Rudeness is the best way to show how much nicer we are than them.
  • Wasn't Matt Haughey planning on having some sort of selection based on quality posts before? Wonder what happened to that. (Probably too much work, I'd have thought)
  • I'd say so. And it would have meant letting everyone in, then kicking people out. That would have been a headache.
  • *sigh* All you nizzoobs broke it already! It's not up. I'd link to you the source of "nizzoobs", but I can't. Cause you broke it. Nizzoobs. (I guess we don't know how long MeFi plans to have it's 20 a day habit?)
  • I just like the word "nizzoobs" so much.
  • I hope nizzoobs isn't insulting. It sounds so nice.
  • Yeah. Like some kind of baboon shaman or something.
  • ENOUGH!!! It's starting to sound like Christmas morning in the jungle. I am 100% with what wedge said. It is getting kind of petty over at the blue board, and the posts are getting kind of lame also given the sizable membership. I for one think they can shove up their asses. Mefi needs to mellow out with such snarkyness. I can do with out it. I feel us Monkeys live in a much warmer climate!......CHEERS EVERYONE!
  • Ooopps! I should have said, "shove IT up their asses. Tee hee hee!
  • First of all, a baboon shaman sounds like the coolest thing EVER. Nizzoobs = newbies. Not insulting. Not really. Depends on your viewpoint, I suppose.
  • ENOUGH!!! It's starting to sound like Christmas morning in the jungle. I am 100% with what wedge said. It is getting kind of petty over at the blue board, and the posts are getting kind of lame also given the sizable membership. I for one think they can shove it up their asses. Mefi needs to mellow out with such snarkyness. I love the smell of irony in the morning. Seriously, I know that we go on about Metafilter way too much here, but hopefully now, those that want to become members can, those that don't can ignore it, and we can all stop comparing ourselves to Metafilter, and debating their every move, and end up all living in peace and harmony and happiness forever. Or, to put it another way, clam out.
  • Oh darn. *slap forehead* the baboon shaman thing was already done! Damn you, Disney!
  • Coming clean here, so that y'all can throw all the poop you want. I've asked for an ID in MeFi through someone else. *braces for poopy salvo*
  • The only thing I'd want out of a MEHtafilter userid is the cookie. You know, to keep track of what threads/comments have changed since my previous visit. As far as quality goes MeFi has slid downhill in all areas. It's not the site I hate/it's the users (to paraphrase Sloan). MoFi is getting better and better.
  • As cool as a baboon shaman sounds, I think a mandrill is better suited to the task. I'm staying with MoFi.
  • MoFi 4Ever and I heart MoFi
  • I love the smell of irony in the morning. beauty dng I'd get one, sure why not. MoFi's the place for me though. The beer is cheaper here too. /hoist
  • i'll be trying to get mefi accts for 2 monkeys who emailed me overnight. i'm guessing it's going to be much harder to beat the clock this time 'round, but i will try every day til i get them in. if i do get them in before matt shuts the doors again, i will then try for any other monkeys who want me to on a first email first serve basis. omg it sure helps getting people accounts if mefi is actually up...!! I for one think they can shove it up their asses. Mefi needs to mellow out with such snarkyness thanks so much for making me feel welcome here, you're so kind. sounds like you're packing enough ad hominem in your monkey bags to make most cranky mefites look positively dainty in comparison. you sure you don't want an acct...? oy.
  • Beer!? Where!? Why nobody told me about it!?
  • Hey certainsomeone I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with regrets about their choice of username. I thought mine was funny for exactly one day. Now I'm stuck with it. And everytime I go to a wedding I end up telling some poor soul my story.
  • count me in with wedge, BBF, orbit, et al. i'm here to stay, and visit mefi far less nowadays.
  • are you sure this was real? i saw something yesterday about a new mefi april fool's joke by matt, but didn't read it....and mefi is down today, i see. i'm happy here, anyway.
  • I think wedge and orbit would fit right in at MeFi and I'm e-mailing Matt to ask for expedited citizenship for them.
  • dxlifer, it's a cruel one if it is a joke.
  • Zemat there's bananaweizen and monkeybock on tap, along with a lovely EekEek Pilsner. I think Wolof stuck some 40'z in the freezer too.
  • Wasn't Matt Haughey planning on having some sort of selection based on quality posts before? Wonder what happened to that. if i recall correctly most mefi members didn't like that idea, it seemed unfair to make new people perform tricks to get membership when we didn't have to do anything of the sort. i think most of us were of the mind that the doors should be flung open indiscriminately. The only thing I'd want out of a MEHtafilter userid is the cookie. You know, to keep track of what threads/comments have changed since my previous visit. me too, me too...! can we put this on a wish list somewhere, as the special mofi version of metaphilter is being developed...? It's not the site I hate/it's the users thanks for your hate. i love that hurt feeling it gives me. i think it bears noting that many mefites have been monkeys longer than you have, and that we signed up over here because we wanted to meet and play with the people who'd been lurking and not able to sign up. how that warrants us being called names and treated badly, i don't know. so again with the church lady dances of superiority, where many monkeys show off how they're not very nice at all. i'll repeat what i've said before, it was a huge mistake to officially call mofi a metafilter clone. all it's done is give some folks an unfortunate chip on their shoulders.
  • I'm all for freedom and people having voices on the mighty MeFi, but shouldn't something be done about it being down and out all the time before adding more straw to the camels back? :-\
  • Hey... MeFi is just another sandbox to play in. I like playing here best with all my monkey friends, but sometimes you want to hang out with other friends the next street over. And, amen t r a c y: crapping in our sandbox by calling the neighbors names doesn't make us any better.
  • I agree with t r a c y. Again. Also, as Wolof mentioned earlier, maybe a quarter of our members are also Metafilter members. And I can't think of any that have been antagonistic or rude over here. Saying that they're all a bunch of cunts over there is the same as saying a large part of our membership are cunts. We've even been invited to two Metafilter Meet ups, which people seemed to enjoy. Maybe they're nice after all, hey. I'll try and stop whinging now. (I am a pom, though. Its hard to stop doing what we're best at...)
  • thank t r a c y. i always thought mofi's selling point was the monkeys were friendly and more laid back. but this thread, and others before it, are full of bitterness and, perhaps, a trace of really foul sour grapes. in the past week i've read more than four threads where something i was part of was dismissively, derisively snubbed. it didn't feel too good. but maybe i'm oversensitive.
  • *agrees with t r a c y* What were these threads, ifjuly?
  • I prefer Mofi. That said - I've always wondered, is "whinging" the same as "whining"? Is the "g" silent? Because in my head, whenever I read that it sounds like "WIN-jing". Or occasionally, "WING-ing". And at least when I was a kid, to "whing" something was to throw it hard at someone, as in "He picked up a rock and whinged it at me!"
  • Yeah its said "WIN-jing", Fes. It basically means complaining, incessantly, about anything and everything. And nothing, if done properly.
  • I'll be damned. Thanks!
  • ach meta never works anymore anyways , who wants a punch up ?
  • If this turns out to be an April Fools joke I'm swearing off the Blue forever.
  • Some new kids had signed up this morning, at least, before it went down. So I doubt it is a joke.
  • Ifjuly and T r a c y, please don't take it personally. I think the vast majority of Monkeyfilter members ended up here because we thought Metafilter was a cool place full of interesting people, and we were looking for something similar. Sadly, with 840+ members on Monkeyfilter, it's inevitable that some of them are going to view their exclusion from Metafilter not as the unfortunate result of overcrowding, but as a direct personal insult. Sadder still, some subset of that group is going to let their own personal insecurities spill out into behavior that is dimissive, derisive, or otherwise declasse. Saddest of all, those are going to be the ones who stand out of the crowd most. All of which is a long winded way of saying I: am glad you're here; hope you stick around; and strongly suspect that most Monkeyificationites agree with me on both counts.
  • Sooooz there were new member sign ups yesterday, and a metatalk thread where we were happily welcoming them into the blue. i'd link to it, but mefi's still shaking off that bad wiki software from yesterday.
  • but as a direct personal insult. ITS WORSE THAN THAT,ITS A CAREFULLY ORGANISED CONSPIRACY, DON'T TELL ANYONE !
  • anyway , feel free to join my wee club on orkut. *looks at tracy*
  • I had started a long, dreadfully earnest appeal, but found on preview that jacobw had already tackled it much more eloquently. I am also very glad our friends from MeFi are here. Please stick around. Any MoFites who acquire dual citizenship, congrats! Make us proud, and come back to play sometime. Wedge, Orbit: buck up gents. Have a banana daiquiri. Fes just posted something nice for everyone.
  • MeFi is back up, in case y'all didn't already know.
  • and then? and then? Matt replied to my email and said i was smelly! *snif* and then? he hit me! *sees interesting thread, bounces off to play*
  • *pretending to be really busy while looking the other way, tracy steels herself against sarge's fetching kilt and crazy orkut ways* so, uhm... yay mefi's back up...! i have the new sign ups page loaded and ready to go for noon pst.
  • thanks for your hate. i love that hurt feeling it gives me Now t r a c y, I can't be hating on you. Good toronto person as far as I can tell (have a banana! my gift of monkey mirth!). But you must admit that not everyone on metafilter gets along and it is tiresome to see things devolve into flaming and finger pointing. It's those people that make metafilter less than it used to seem to be. Maybe some new blood improves things, maybe not. But there is an element of animosity and over-familiarity there that hasn't shown up here and tainted MoFi (yet). And I was just riffing on Sloan saying of Consolidated "It's not the band I hate / It's their fans" and am not thinking of any MeFites in particular but just the vibe I have noticed there in the last couple of months. Must have something to do with it being a US election year.
  • Today's signup allotment has been exceeded. Please try again tomorrow at noon. Wait, is that from yesterday or does that mean today? *click**click*. . . *click**click*
  • yesterday. it won't be noon PST for another 98 minutes.
  • How does it work? Do only 20 people get to fill out a form, or does everyone get to the form and the first 20 people who finish and hit [send] get in?
  • I would think it's the former. Pretty cruel to show the form and then not accept the entry.
  • if it's the same as last time - the first 20 people who finish and hit send get in, so don't expect to get in the first day, if at all - depending on how many peeps are trying at once and how long matt's going to be doing noon sign ups.
  • So its all down to who can avoid the mighty JRun, then.
  • MeFi is so slow right now — the prospective new members noon pouncing will probably crash it.
  • Signups: 12:00 PST CPU Toast is served: 12:00:34 PST /revs_engine
  • *pull down goggles* *grips wheel* *looks over at petebest* *nods* *revs engine*
  • *slashes petebest's and certainsome1's tires* *hops on unicycle*
  • *knew that twig would help*
  • Dammit. Where is Alnedra's hammer when you really need it?
  • schweet! *endzone dance*
  • in, baby
  • Connection Refused
  • *bumps chests with petebest* ditto, yo. way to go gyan. sorry dng. do it tomorrow.
  • in
  • I believe I made it. It looks the same from the inside.
  • I only wnated to get it so I could say to monkeyfilter So long, StinkTown... Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
  • I got in! I can't believe it. The computers here at school were being so slow, it wouldn't reload. And then I almost fucked it up, heh. Not that I have any intention of leaving MoFi. I loves it here. But, as I said, I have a big mouth, and would like to comment occasionally. And also, as was noted, the "new comments" thread tracking would be great. I'm not big on posting links, but I plan to save anything I find for here. 'Cause I like it better. Plus, it didn't make me jump hoops (speaking of the 'submit a link, if we like it, you're in' thing? I spent ages on that...)
  • That wasn't so bad. Did I just get lucky? See you in the blue, monkeys... and here too.
  • so.... now what?
  • Post a link to monkeyfilter.
  • pfft - troll of course! *huddles with other new MeFikeys; 'psst psst psst . . psst psst . . psst pssst psst'*
  • A small tip (which my selfish self kept to myself) get a multi-clipboard s/w like M8Clips. Write down everything like name, real name, password, email and cut-n-paste it in there. When the sign-up page loads up, just click on the first entry , then go to the M8Clips window, right click on the name, it will automatically get pasted and send you to the next entry. Just keep on right-clicking. No typing, and the whole process literally takes 4-5 seconds.
  • Not trolling, banana throwing! or poo, depending on how you feel about the whole thing.
  • Scott = 17390 = karmaville = Scott
  • Don't hate me, I got my Mefi membership on my first post-11:59am click. Right, if anyone cares, here is my stance: t r a c y is so right and we really shouldn't hate so much on the blue. A good chunk of the members here are Mefites and it's not fair on them. So many comments Monkeys make about Metafilter come off sounding like personal insults to the members there. Secondly, I also want a membership as much for the cookie (which we do have, t r a c y -- although maybe it's different to Metafilter's) as much as a chance to comment. Now that my initial excitement is over ("It's got links that I've NEVER SEEN BEFORE!!"), I doubt anyone at Mefi will actually hear much from me. My loyalty is to MoFi. :) Oh, and my breedster bug is an adult! *celebrates by handing out truckloads of 'nanas*
  • Or, post a bunch of links about bananas. That would work too.
  • I'M IN! OMFGBBQROFLLOTHF!?! time to implement THE AGENDA. I feel so much *taller* today.
  • yay, i got monkey lkc in...! tomorrow i'll be trying for Wolof, and then so on as per my first mail first serve list.
  • 17511 biatch!
  • *takes banana* *searches it for breedster bug eggs* *doesn't find any* *shrugs* *eats banana*
  • 17470
  • Looks like mainly Monkeys got it. Good show. And glad you got in, tracicle - if anyone deserved it, it was you.
  • naxosaxur: 17511? Hm. I'm 17421. And Scott is 17390. Are they practicing a different kind of math, or letting in more than 20 per day?
  • now that I'm in, the allure is gone *eats banana*
  • i already feel jaded.
  • y'know it looks like 5 more monkeys joined up in that last 15 minutes . .
  • I'm so sorry dng. I wasn't entirely paying attention, and thought, it's 3:01, and there probably isn't a chance, but could try to load the page anyways - and maybe my loading it caused your connection refusal :( I did get in - and it's more strange than elating. And I keep thinking that I mistyped my password, and so I will never be able to get back in again. Also - it is like switching from Word to WordPerfect - the software might be older and more sophisticated, but it just feels strange. I do love the simplicity of Monkeyfilter design.
  • And glad you got in, tracicle - if anyone deserved it, it was you. no worries on tracicle getting in, if she didn't make it this time i was going to hand over my spare account to her. i have t r a c y and tracy! oh and lkc's user number is 17501
  • err joined monkeyfilter. dang.
  • Hooray! It's goatse time.
  • I can also try to submit names for people who are in bad timeszones, have irregular internet access (which was my situation the last times it opened like this) or bad connections (I wonder if the speed of your connection makes a difference?) t r a c y, maybe you could email me some of the names on your list. There does seem to be membership number strangeness happening. The numbers granted today range from at least 17421 to 17465. Also - I don't think I will do very well in school this term. I am very grateful mathowie found the time to open memberships, but I am also thinking about how it happened just in the beginning of essay crunch.
  • I'm there now too. Though not with my name of choice. It was... easy? Shrug. Perhaps there isn't such a big demand as people thought?
  • ...and I don't know how much I'll be commenting there. Filling out my profile, I realized I didn't want to make my website or e-mail public. I didn't have any qualms about doing that here.
  • I'm really glad so many of you have gotten in already -- you deserve it! (Except for you nasty ones huddling in the corner being pelted with bananas. Bad monkeys! Bad!) May I suggest that you add your MeFi user page link on your MoFi user pages, so we can see what all the monkeys are up to over in the lions' den? Especially since a lot of yez are using different nicks over there. Oh, and Fes: "whinging" is the UK equivalent of our "bitching" -- that used to confuse me too.
  • Good idea, languagehat. I'm joining up one other wrong-timezone person, but I can try for other people too. Just don't double-up to increse your odds, or it could get messy.
  • Daniel your info isn't open to non-members, and you can choose to hide your email address from members too. i've been a member of mefi for 4 years and no one has ever abused my email address, people have only ever mailed me in a friendly manner. plus there's no rule saying you have to supply a website - altho' i don't know why you wouldn't want to have more visitors. gspm - thank you for the 'nana :-) mefi is no worse than it was when it started up 4 years ago. it has it's ups and downs and once you're accostomed to the ebb and flow the negatives are really easy to ignore. sometimes the so called negatives are pretty entertaining tho', heh. and yah the upcoming american election is probably contributing some extra snark, but even amidst the more contentious threads i always learn something new about the people and the politics. of course some days i can't stomach the news, american or otherwise, so i just skip it. oh tracicle i thought he meant a cookie that would store our own comments, in our user profiles, or something like that. i'm confused and dizzy 8-)
  • I made it in too- 17499. It's kind of funny- yesterday I was all nonchalant about joining MeFi, and then when the opportunity presented itself, darned if I didn't go for it. But for the time being, it'll be mostly for the cookies and the AskMetafilter. *wonders if more than 20 people got in today* [bananas to all]
  • I wonder if the speed of your connection makes a difference? I was on a dial-up (connected at 47.6 kbps) and kept opening tabs of the new user link in Firefox. I actually got through twice although it would only let me sign up once (Mmmmm cookies...). YMMV.
  • People who want in, should definitely try in the next couple of days.
  • Oh, and Fes: "whinging" is the UK equivalent of our "bitching" Oh, we bitch in Britain, too. But only the girls.
  • welcome to the dark side, monkeys! Don't forget you can always ignore MeTa--many many do (that's where most of the snark is...and Seth)
  • Is there a fee with new sign up, or was that for those like me when sign ups were off?
  • *stares at amber and tracy , waves kilt * oh , come on , how could you NOT join an orkut club dedicated to the guy in the left hand corner, especially after he's joined it himself.
  • *peeks up sgt.'s kilt, runs away screaming* ; >
  • no fee, thomcat, but matt's prob gonna close it after just a few days.
  • *sigh* as usual, all the action occurs when I'm fast asleep. t r a c y, couldn't agree more with you. We're happy here, but let's not be flinging poo at the Blue. sciurus: I'll deposit my hammer when I go to bed. Everybody sign in and sign off when they take it okie? *hands over 100-ton hammer* Incidently, I borrowed that from City Hunter, so for those not keen on lead poisoning, bring it back!
  • Sorry, what's happening?
  • jb i'm going to forward a couple of monkey requests to you, thanks...! damn you sarge. *stomps off to join his dumb orkut club* you owe me...! i'll start a hello kitty club or something like that and you'll have to join, hmmph.
  • Whoa! spent all day outside and didn't get on till late, only to find Monkeys have apparently taken over the Blue. WAY TO GO, MONKEYS. I shall now expect a new era of peace and understanding on Metafilter. (I be uncertain whether or not I really want to join. What if they don't like me? What if Quonsar hates me? What if I'm not BLUE enough?) Metafilter: It frightens me.
  • the quidnunc kid, pointing to the specific threads would amount to naming exact names (as the derisive comments are obvious inthread), which i don't see as useful at this point. i didn't mean to accuse the site full out; i've just noticed it's been particularly...uncomfortable (what's the word i want? not snobby exactly...but not so friendly. albeit unintentionally so, perhaps) in the past two weeks or so (maybe i've just gone into threads with those sort of comments this week more than usual). but thank you to those of you who explained it in a calm manner following t r a c y et al's comments. the thread's calmed down since, it seems. and yay to all of you who got in. (except the shock site spammer guy, if he/she's even a monkey here...probably not!)
  • I go out of town for a week, and MeFi membership opens up. Bleah.
  • new membership is already closed. the server was really taxed yesterday, 131 new people got in, instead of just 20. from the new user page: Membership is again closed While MetaFilter goes through another bout of growing pains, it's time to regroup and reprogram to better handle the crowds. During that time all new user signups are closed.
  • wow...congratulations to all you new mefi-monkeyites! now... /she ponders, scratching carelessly under her arm, does this mean that i need to tune into both sites more or less often? as the lines of membership blur....will there be more or less double-posting from site to site? will monkeys who are now mefi's spend more time and effort there and allow this site to be neglected? are lurkers fickle-hearted? if i see something that prompts an 'i gotta respond to that!' on mefi....can i funnel it through here? sometimes i want to thank someone for a wonderful link....sometimes they are missing such extant knowledge on subjects? don't let my monkey down, it's only voices posting.. to neil young's tune
  • yeah but get this - you have to *pay* for the uniforms!! I was like - yeah right!
  • oh well. Maybe next time. (Thanks for the effort, tracicle! I really appreciate it! *bow*) I see a rather disturbing string of "0 comments" at the top of MoFi tonight. Let's hope it't not due to mass migration. *cross fingers*
  • Its always quiet on the weekends, Alnedra. Sometimes too quiet, but I don't think we've been abandoned here yet. Have we? Hello? HELLO?
  • it's slower on both the blue and the lavendar on the weekends, and i don't think mofi has anything to worry about anyway.
  • No, you have not been abandoned. I will certainly keep reading and commenting (and linking) at monkeyfilter. I've find the links more in my interests, and the discussions short enough to follow (no comment on quality, but just sheer length). I joined because I had been reading metafilter last time it opened and didn't then (too difficult a time). But then I was looking at the discussions, and realised that when there are 75 comments on X controversial issue, really, did anyone need mine? I think this would make me a very much more lurkish person there than I am here. I am very sad that so many people did not get the chance - I really hope membership will open again, at least at a trickle.
  • yeah but get this - you have to *pay* for the uniforms!! I was like - yeah right! Nah, you just have to jump a old member for theirs. ; > I think Matt said he might switch to a posting for membership system or another way in, as too many people found a backdoor or exploited his bad code or something. I'm thrilled some of you got in, tho.
  • amberglow, that's a harsh way of putting it. Only one user (r*****) registered using the backdoor. The others were told they could register, so they did.
  • ifjuly: fair enough. Thanks for your reply. :)
  • All right, who swiped my uniform??
  • Only one user admitted it, Gyan...I think more got in that way. *walks by languagehat, whistling innocently*
  • still staying here, thanks.
  • Nothing should change here, dxlifer: if you see something on Mefi that you'd like to discuss here, same guidelines apply as before. Although a lot of people did get in at Metafilter, not all of them were Monkeys and there's still a lot of lurkers here, as well as people who are happy enough to continue on as we are. (Which makes me very happy :)
  • I honestly missed this completely. Looks like you're stuck with me. I'll try to be a bit brighter.
  • forks, sit up straight willya
  • he knew!
  • Amber, from the MeTa thread, I strongly suspect that reklaw was the only one who exploited in, strictly speaking. It really sounds to me like Matt's counting code was busted, probably because of some kind of race condition when it got hit so hard. We 100 or so people hit the server within a few seconds, I think.
  • all those '0' comments on the front page seemed to be a technical hitch as there were new comments showing up on the internal sidebars. it was very confusing yesterday.
  • 140/17333 = .008% non-issue anyone?
  • I expect only about 3000 of those 17000 accounts are actually active, though. If you then have another 500 or 1000 people all trying to get through to the site at the exact same second, and who keep pressing refresh compulsively, it probably would wreck the server. (Or I might have misread your comment entirely, petebest. I'm not sure now)
  • petebest, .8%
  • Wait... so is MeFi member ship closed again? Like, closed closed? If so, then... shit.
  • the_bone: yep, closed. Matt mentioned something about switching things up and trying the merit-post option, but I wouldn't hold our breath.
  • ...wow, thanks t r a c y. Mostly I wanted it for the cookie, but there is the occasional political flamewar I would like to jump into (and it keeps me from doing it here). Though I am not going anywhere, I like the diversity here, and the lower comment count keeps things more sane. But as it is, I need to actually get some work done today.
  • no problem, MeFi is down (again). Deep in the recesses of the MeFi server room, a lone monkey plays with the ethernet connection. out *click* in *click* out *click* in *click* out *click*
  • Though I am not going anywhere, I like the diversity here, and the lower comment count keeps things more sane. I'd never thought of this before, but now that I'm "in" I find that commenting in MeFi is like standing in a huge crowd, everyone talking at once -- and that I'm choosing to stay quiet rather than join in the fray. MoFi is more hospitable in that way. tracicle, have you thought about a member cap at all? Not that we need one this instance or any time soon, but about what kind of size you think is manageable?
  • throw the bums out! oh, wait . .wait hold up
  • I agree with certainsome1. My member should be capped as soon as possible.
  • well darn glad i won't have to go through the merit-post option. i might get a few comments on a post but i'm not exactly drawing in hundreds of insane comments per thread. like this one. oh, wow, did i really write this then spend 20 minutes poking around in other links before hitting "post"? jeez, i gotta get my head together. damn daylight savings time change is killing me.
  • Don't get me wrong, I'm totally down with MoFi. However, I've been dying to be registered on MeFi for almost a year now... and I'm really frustrated to find that, at the end of a somewhat difficult week out of town, I may have missed my only opportunity for a while. This sucks.
  • I'm definitely capping quid's member right now to prevent any more comments like that. I hadn't given it much though, though, certainsome1. I'd like to keep it open for as long as I can -- I believe with a little help from Monkeys later if needed, we can keep the site open indefinitely. I doubt we'll come to that for a long time yet, though, so no point worrying.
  • Yeah, I knew it was serious gun-jumping as soon as I hit "post" but was curious. Although I'm happy to have made it onto the blue, I wonder if 17k people isn't too many and made me think that closing the borders at some number (5k?) might not be a bad idea. Again, not, you know, that we're in any danger of hitting 5k. Just wasting thoughts as I am wont to do. Especially when I'm supposed to be writing.
  • See, now I can't get the image of trac capping quid's member out of my head. brrrrrrr.
  • forks, if you want me to get my member out of your head, you only need ask. **hums benny hill theme, runs away**
  • g'night folks! Drive safe!
  • You know, I keep thinking of Monkeybashi holding on of 'em candle snuffers with 'em looong handles, and trying to swing that snuffing cap onto quid's... nevermind. G'night!
  • What about moderation? Plastic has a great moderation system, quite similar to slashdot's. They have a large # of registered users AND they keep it somewhat intimate. MoFi isn't even close to that need yet, but I'd say that it'd make sense in the future.
  • CellarFloor, can you please use the term "members" instead of "users"? I'm trying to get banned, here. Thanks.
  • banned... or "dismembered"?
  • Yo, now y'all wanna dis my member?
  • I don't remember.
  • We're not dissing the member, we're trying to remember why we wouldn't dismember your member with a member punch, you member. Also, I'd like to add: penis.
  • You guys are silly.
  • to As Time Goes By: You must dismember this But then you cannot piss And you will start to cryyyyyyy
  • Kimberly: They're Monkeys. Whad'ja expect, Shakespeare? Back to your cages, and stop PLAYING with THAT!
  • ssssssssss,^*! qxlnn 32h Oop! Ack!
  • tobe or nottobe that ist he qu estOOKOOKOOK!
  • 9116 more monkeys and we can start working on King Lear.
  • We can start now! Ook ook ook!
  • boys will be boys... sigh...
  • They're Monkeys. Whad'ja expect, Shakespeare? Well, eventually... Yes.
  • That monkey shakespeare link is bananas.
  • boys will be boys... ...as long as tracicle doesn't start with the capping thing.
  • They'll still be boys, Zemat, just...capped.
  • It's for their own protection.
  • So, there some sort of official "member cap" after all? Is it red, with elastic, and does it have Monkey ears? Wait we've diskgusted this already, haven't we? Ok then, can we have hairy Monkey suits*? *for those of us who do wear pants.
  • bluehorse....boys in their monkeysuits are usually hairy anyway! do we all really want to look that that? and to then have these little caps on the ends of our members as well? too comical to visualise... i'll settle for just the mouseketeer ears.
  • Right! This thread has become terminally silly, and will be removed! How can you expect to raise the level of discourse with such nonsense!? It's disgraceful! would the monkey suits have those 'bare asses' on them? Heh heh heh
  • That's baboons, petebest. Or maybe bonobos (for ease of entry and all that). I vote for XXXL mohair sweater and red hair dye for our official suit!
  • Absolutely STUNNING!
  • Um - MeFi is down again. (MoFi: +1)
  • Baboons are monkeys. Old World Monkeys. Mandrills and Hanadryas Baboons have the best arses, in my humble opinion. Mandrills are just the coolest. That is all.
  • So, we're going to become a FurriesFilter? Not that there's anything WRONG with that, I'm just, you know, wondering...
  • Hey, is this the longest thread ever? If not - anyone wanna talk about Buffy?
  • Fes, languagehat et al... The closest North American equivalent to 'whingeing' (you can spell it like this too!) is probably 'kvetching' ... subtly different from whining and bitching... Sorry, just had to add to this excellent thread.
  • Silly quidnunc, Buffy is for ending a thread. That said, anyone in North America know if there is a new Angel on this week? And on the subject of monkeys, though orangutangs are apes, Alnedra's right. We should all dress like the Librarian as the official ape sponsor of monkeyfilter (just don't call him one) and the coolest ape character ever (Dr. Zira being a close second, of course - Dr Zaius may have the best song, but he's a villain and so out of the running).
  • Dr Zaius is no villian. He's just a poor misunderstood man (ape) trying to do whats best for the world in difficult times. All hail Doctor Zaius.
  • He wanted to supress the archeological findings! He was mean to Dr. Zira! He was a very bad ape. (It's a really simple world - Chimpanzee = Good Scientists, Orangutang = Bad Politicians, and Gorrillas = Bad meatheads. But I only ever saw teh movies - I know the series flushed out the world much better from when humans still could talk).
  • He wanted to supress the archeological findings! He was mean to Dr. Zira! He was a very bad ape. I know jb, but someone has to stick up for him.
  • anyone in North America know if there is a new Angel on this week? no new angel eps 'til april 14th. i don't see how they'll be able to end the series properly, with only a few more eps to go...
  • So when does the group grooming start?
  • Speaking of membership, three more and we're at 900. *scans horizon for incoming monkeys*
  • Hey languagehat, c'mere you got a nicy juicy louse in your...THERE GOT IT! *chews vigorously*
  • Somebody give sciurus a mint. flashboy: Thank ye kindly. I forgot baboons have tails. And you're right, Mandrills are cool.
  • 901! Somebody open a window.
  • holy crap they do have uniforms. Looks like we could Monkey up a couple ourselves . .
  • Is it me, or is MeFi down . .like . . A LOT lately?
  • sure seems like it, peteb2
  • I was thinking the same thing myself this morning.
  • /me blames frogs. Ever since he joined, it just hasn't been the same.
  • I didn't know MoFi allowed Anonymous Commenting?
  • All those comments made by "anonymous" are actually made by petebest, who has the disctinction of being the only user I know of so far who has accidentally deleted his account.
  • And let us hope the last. Glad we didn't loose you, petebest/petebest2!
  • Didn't know that. A toast for petebest and his reincarnation.
  • *can't stop giggling at the cause of petebest's demise*
  • disctinction Having a bad keyboard day here.
  • Actually Wolof, I was investigating the ability to . . delete . . one's account. Erm. . yes, well quite innocently I thought removal from the database would clear my email from potential spammers - I have since learned that (a) No, it won't, and the potential to fubar your account is high - almost certain. and (b) spammers can't harvest profiles. Although an unscrupulous - possibly television watching - person could do it one-by-one. I also discovered that although I had removed myself from the database, I was still somewhere since I couldn't re-signup with that nick. Since then, I have moved to the much more elevated pete_best, which has the benefit of not being petebest2 which only got me hasslage from The Man. *glares at goetter* Stay in School, kids! (I kid about the television part - I kid!)
  • But you didn't give me a chance to use undead-bride-of-petebest, or ♣ (The Artist Formerly Known As Petebest), or ....
  • Or "Stuart Sutcliffe".
  • The Three Faces of Petebest
  • The return of the revenge of petebest part 2 perhaps?
  • "Mr Underhill, I presume?"
  • Welcome back the the world's only tripartite monkey! Hooray! Hoorah! Hooroo! for pete_best/petebest/petebest2 out of three.
  • What did you do with petegood and petebetter?
  • Pssst! Goetter used to be petebetter. Pass it on!
  • pete_goetter? Hey, one more nick and I'll be a four-assed monkey! /southpark
  • dang. stupid login. starting to make me feel like a jerry lewis spastic fit. GehOYvenMav'n!
  • look dude it isn't me, i haven't been even hanging out over there very much. it's easier to shout above the din here than over in the blue. and, this site doesn't choke and fail to load. ever. unlike other "filter" sites i could mention.
  • MonkeyFilter: doesn't choke and fail to load
  • Looking for METATALK! *ding!* clapclapclapclapclapclapclap
  • Don't tell anyone, but I haven't read Mefi in days. Now I think I've wasted effort on a membership I won't use. So, who wants to buy a genuine "tracicle" Mefi account? I'm sure I'll use it occasionally, especially if I find that golden post.
  • Matt says MeFi runs on IIS. MoFi is Apache yes? (I forget the GET syntax . . )
  • It runs on an Apple IIS? I guess we can forgive it a little down time then, somebody's probably fired up Visicalc and choked up all the memory.
  • Yep, MoFi's on a linux box running Apache 1.3.29. Nice and stable.
  • The funny bit was someone suggesting that the answer might be to rewrite MeFi with PHP and Postres. Yo, dude, been done. Many times over...
  • BookFilter and SportsFilter are still alive, btw.
  • I frequented bookfilter for a while. It's well worth joining up. It's quiet, but that just means it's easier to be heard. And sportsfilter is a brilliantly designed site -- pity I'm not enough of a sports fan. Does anyone there talk about netball?
  • apache 1.3.29? dang, trac, all the cool kids are running apache 2 now. except for that whole "don't know if PHP/mySQL works or not" thing. i never got anything useful going with PHP/mySQL so never followed up on whether it works now or not (used to be a disclaimer that it didn't). plus there's a bunch of vulnerabilities fixed in apache 2. and it's, like, sooooo cool. i KNEW half of mefi's problems were that it used IIS...
  • I'll pass that on to the host, frogs. :)
  • down again. Just sayin'. /me sighs, rocks back and forth on heels, flips through 3 month old issue of "People"
  • hey, are you done with that copy of Highlights?
  • yeah but someone already solved the jumble. It was "giraffe".
  • Great. Thanks. Thanks a LOT.
  • pete_best, YOU are Goofus. I am Gallant. (And, yes, I have always gotten beat up a lot)
  • mathowie's thinking about it again....
  • it?
  • I should hope the server and various jrun errors will be fixed before then... *reads* Ah. Good.
