Choose your own iPod adventure
I always read those things with my fingers stuck in between the pages where the story branched until both hands were wound up like a cat's cradle. God I loved those things and all their offshoots. Any other fans?

Nope, those things sucked. Did some D&D and Car Wars ones, and there was no real logic to them, there was no set of core motivations or behavior that led to victory. It seemed like you won or lost at random and the only way to get through and feel like they weren't a waste of the time already spent in them was to jam your fingers in the pages as you describe. Yay fun.

There were fun book-games though, but they took two people to play.

I played Grail Quest a fair bit (the one with Pip and half-crazed Merlin). Never quite liked the AD&D "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, and didn't like the Lone Wolf stuff neither.

Alas, the book games I've encountered are all flat compared to a lively tableful of players all scheming, joking, and fussing for advantage, treasure, and magical knick-knacks..

Ah...nostalgia. Twelve hour TT gaming sessions punctuated by bouts of home-cooked food (we had a gamer's mom who loved having us around; ply us with mixing bowl sized piles of chicken wings) and occasional running into walls after too much Coke and Mountain Dew.
