Built to keep Napoleon at bay this Suffolk Martello tower has been renovated into a home. I love the brick work. Deeply envious of the view.

Martello towers are apparently mis-named after the tower guarding the anchorage at Mortella Point, in Corsica. Examples were built throughout the British Empire (which explains the cameo appearance in Ulysses). via via

  • Seems like a perfect beach house to me - the need to watch the coastline for invaders ensured a great view, and built to withstand any weather event short of a tsunami. Beats a lighthouse, less stairs and less glare.
  • For another remodeling of an old military landmark without destroying the aesthetics of it there's this bunker house on Sullivan's Island near Charleston, SC.
