Happy Fourth of July!
  • View another bad version here or here. And when they're done singing... PLAY BALL!!! *******Happy Fourth, everybody!******* Fireworks will start at 11 pm. I'm going to pop popcorn and sit on the roof. Anyone care to join me?
  • Mr. BlueHorse went to bed at 8:30, as is his wont and predilection, and I decided to watch the fireworks on my own. I pulled a lawn chair out into the pickup in the driveway, popped some popcorn, popped the tab off a beer, and settled in with the Border Collie to watch the fireworks pop off. I could have gone up to Thousand Lights--the rough translation of the name of the hill 1/4 mile away from the house. I don't know the Basque words for the name, and the story is that the hill was called so because you can see the town from there, but there are a thousand colored lights on the 4th and during Christmas, so it's very pretty and quite apt. I decided to stay at home, though, as there's getting to be quite the crowd up there in recent years. Also thought about climbing on the roof, which is what we used to do when the kids were little, but decided to wait till I could corrupt my grandkids, too. Either that, or wait till I'm 60. It will be more fun that way. Probably pass on the beer, in either case. It was quite a show. The Daisy-dog thoroughly enjoyed it. She stood with ears pricked and watched the lights, then after a bit, sat through the so-so smaller ones, but stood and woofed very softly for the big ones. It wasn't the noise, it was the unusual lights that had her attention. We finished the popcorn, are ready for bed--Happy 4th to everyone!
  • We watched a free concert with the works in Pennsauken. Foghat was the headliner. But for the fireworks WMGK played their musical selections. Waited for it... waited... Sure enough, they ALWAYS play American Woman by The Guess Who. A fine night withal.
  • Dang!!! Didn't see this until today. My first Best of the Web nomination for '09 Follow the instructions at the end of the video.
  • Here in Seattle, the fireworks show score always plays some Jimi Hendrix. For a few years in the 1990s, there was a rumor that special fireworks were going to be deployed that would burst into the shape of Jimi's face! Never happened.
  • An eye infection kept me out of the sun most of this week and even away from the glowing computer screen for a while... just starting to feel better and get some rest by the 4th. My respect for the residents of the neighboring trailer park increased as there were no more than two loud bangs outside my window last night and I could just barely hear the 'bombs bursting in air' a few miles away off Pismo Beach. Didn't even eat a hot dog on July 4th, but I finally feel genuinely better. So, watching the Stars and Stripes Formuppets on July 5th felt very right. Thanks.
  • Belated Happy 4th, Merkin Monkeys! That Muppet piece is priceless.
  • Thanks, BlueHorse, for the quite delightful holiday image! My holiday was classic small-town USA: I walked into our village for the parade and chicken BBQ, spent the afternoon fussing around the yard, had burgers and strawberry shortcake at a family party and then rode my bike to a fireworks display as the stars came out. The crowd oohed and aaahed right on cue and then lined up at "Sno-Top" afterwards. It was perfect, albeit a tad chilly. I hope all the monkeys enjoyed the day regardless of location, temperature or national affiliation.
