Curious Snowed-in George: How about that weather, eh? On this, the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, nearly all of Canada and most of the northern US is experiencing wild storms and record low temperatures.

Even here on normally temperate Vancouver Island we've had snow for a week and there's a howling blizzard going on at the moment. What's it like where you are?

  • Too cold to go in the pool:P However, since we usually get our weather from the northwest, you can laugh at Calif. in a day or two.
  • the bay area is rainy and mild (usual winter weather) we had a rare cold spell last week and it seems like more may be heading our way, as path says. blizzards in vancouver, pretty crazy :P stay warm islander!
  • Oh, good! an excuse to post puppy movie... Lara got her first big snow here in Michigan...Winter Dog And, these are photos of the Huron River the day of the storm....
  • *shivers in corner under blanket* *mutters--Solstice. Solstice. Solstice.*
  • Nice ones, HB! Sadly, the snow here in NYC is already yellow, brown, and other colors you wouldn't want to step on. But it was beautiful while it lasted...
  • I'm visiting my folks here in Texas and it got below freezing here last night which is strange. I was dreaming of an 80 degree Christmas, darnit!
  • Here in the SF Bay Area, cold and rain for the forseeable future. But no blizzards. Yet.
  • It's still snowing here in Montréal; more that a foot and counting. Exceptionally fluffy snow, not at all hard to remove.
  • Cute pooch, HB and great photos! The wind has eased up here and it's warmer but still snowing like mad. Here's the current view from my deck.
  • Mostly sunny and mid/upper 70s in Gainesville, FL. In a couple of days, I get to leave this and go to freezing-ass Pittsburgh. Next year, everyone's coming to visit me.
  • Deep snow yesterday, no idea how much... Really REALLY cold temps and windchills... warnings of below 40 tonight. Gotta love southern Minnesota!
  • H-Bob, I was waiting for the part where the camera angle all got skewed up and showed sky after Lara jumped on you... My neighbor has two SibHus and they're in their element now. He can't let the one off leash, as it has no recall at all, and I saw that bad boy dragging him on his belly yesterday. My Daisy-dog Border Collie has a case of the boing-boings in the snow--love it when their puppies with all that amazing energy.
  • We're at 13F, with a windchill of -4F (just about 8 EST). This is not right. And it's supposed to get colder overnight. This afternoon it was in the low 20s, and while the humans were decidedly grumpy, the dog thought it was lovely, invigorating weather, and couldn't understand why he wasn't taken for a real walk. Just a mile or two, y'know.
  • It's a pleasant day here after a cool weekend. 28 Celsius (82F) and sunny. Went snorkelling yesterday, going surfing after work today. I like Sydney. (ignores howl of misery from the other side of the world)
  • jb and I just took the bus up to Canada, snowstorms engulfing us for much of the route. What was supposed to be a 13 hour trip took almost twenty, although the beautiful snowscapes took much of the edge off. As we crossed the boarder into Canada, I heard the Japanese tourists behind us chatting excitedly about 'blizzard' as they looked out at the swirling flakes. I reckon they must be pleased to get the true Canadian experience.
  • Islander...great view...have you got a mooring for my Boston Whaler out there? Bluehorse...yep, I cut those parts out...darn husky can leap on my head when it wants to!
  • No worries, HB, we'll find a berth for you, come hell or high frozen water.
  • Lately there has been of clouds and rain lately. I think the temp has dropped below 70 some of the days. It's FREEZING!
  • Stereotypically, 12C and cloudy and grey and a bit drizzly here in London, England. I dream of snow.
  • Checking in here from Central New York State, where temps are in the single digits and lake-effect snows continue to dump massive quantities. But hey, that's pretty much typical weather...we're used to it and ready for it. Got an industrial-strength snowblower and every thickness of long underwear. Frankly I'm more concerned that the cold temps won't hold long enough for me to get in some cross-country skiing before the next melt.
  • Do you really want to hear about the sunburn I got yesterday while kayaking in the Sounds? Or the hiking in native forest? Or the dolphins we saw while sailing back to town on a catamaran? (Actually it was only 18C with the breeze, but was a clear sunny day all the same. And I didn't catch any fish because we didn't have our fishing gear after all.) Anyone moving to NZ yet?
  • Hey, dirigibleman-- I just left Pittsburgh for TX! Darn, we could have had a mini-meetup!
  • Nicely gloated, Bashi :)
  • Chiming in late here, Seattle has been socked in by unprecedented big snow. I measured the snow on the back deck last night and came up with 9.5"! The entire region is pretty much shut down. I have severe cabin fever after 5 days. Send drinks.
  • kittenhead, I send you a virtual warm, furry san bernard with a neck-cask full of very fine bourbon to warm you through this unusually cold and wintry time. (dog will be wet due to bay area rains) stay away from axes!!
  • Actually it was only 18C with the breeze.../i There will be NO MORE of that gloating. OUT!! OUT!! OUT of this thread. It's 22F here with ice on the back deck so I can't even go out on my crutches and LOOK at the horses now. I'm going stir-crazy, and it's freezing in this room because we haven't finished replacing the windows on the south side of the house. Next gloat post will be met with axes, I'm warning you.
  • temps close to -0- here tonight... husky is sleeping on the hearth... ya know, I support the concept of global warming, but this crap makes it hard to argue the idea!
  • It's well below freezing here in DC. No snow yet. I'm dreaming of a white birthday.
  • We just went without power for ~24 hours - no water, and the house got dingdang freezing. Went to bed in coats and hats. Ick.
  • No gloating here. It was -20°C last night in Ottawa, with a windchill of -30°C. I am just worried that they are talking about +9°C and rain by the weekend. That guarantees flooding and all sorts of lakes of ice when the temperatures suddenly drop again. Last year I had to bail out my driveway so the car didn't get frozen in place. When it is winter, I want winter. Cold, snow, no rain mixed in.
  • It's right at freezing here. Day after Christmas, it'll be 60F.
  • Actually, 67F, according to wunderground. *does taunty little dance*
  • Not so much gloating as trying to tempt you all to move here.
  • We just went without power for ~24 hours - no water, and the house got dingdang freezing. Went to bed in coats and hats. Ick. posted by fish tick Boy, all of the sudden it feels really tropical in here! No more complaining from me. I'm going to have a lovely cup of tea and enjoy the warmth and the view of snowy hills out the window. Fishtick, I'm wishing you the same.
  • Thanks, BH- we're happy now, warm and connected. But definitely going to install a wood stove in the next dwelling!
  • I hope everyone is warm and cosy for Christmas!
