Thumbs out up for hitchin'!
I hate to be contrarian, but I am hopeful that Prop8 passes, and then is found to be SO unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court that it invalidates EVERY marriage in California. But just for personal reasons.
Okay, I lied. Sometimes I really enjoy being contrarian.
no you don't.
Awww, don't worry. We're California. We're sooooooooo gay.
This thing will pass no problem.
that's the thing, see- the castro and west hollywood get all the headlines, while orange/marin counties do all the voting and have all the money....
and fresno, and barstow, and truckee, and riverside, and san diego...
If this means more people can rub whatever bits they choose together, then I'm for it. Or against it. Whichever means more rubbin'.
Sometimes referendums smack of mob rule mentality.
And your problem is, stranger?
*sharpens pitchfork*
yeah, monsieur frommage is correct, the balance of california is much more conservative than most people realize from it's "public face".
the pro-prop8s have raised vastly more money than the antis, which is discouraging, because the antis (ie, the pro-gay-marriagers) have raised a LOT of money!!!!
perhaps all the pickup truck driving yahoos out in the sticks will run out of gas, be unable to afford any more, and not be able to drive the 20 miles to their polling places, leaving the hip, compassionate, rational urban-dwellers to hop on the bus/train/tram/feet and vote NOOOOOOO ON POOPH8TE :P
For all the conservatives' usual talk of government leaving people the hell alone, they sure don't want to leave people the hell alone...
I can't help thinking about all the poor kids that money could have fed, clothed, vaccinated, and educated. Heck, it could have even built a couple of really pretty churches.
"The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published."
That's just stupid. I hope the recipients tell them to fuck right off.
Act 1 passed here in AR, too. It prohibits "unmarried" people who are cohabiting from fostering or adopting. You can guess its intended target.
So foster kids will get kicked around the system until their 18th birthday, when they get kicked out on the street. Plus this law potentially invalidates the child custody section of my will. But hey, at least the kids won't have gay parents, when they're strung out and living under a bridge.
Go team.
Two arrested in Prop 8 street fightA political debate over the right for same-sex couples to marry caused about 20 people in San Mateo to get into a verbal altercation Monday, leading at least two people who oppose same-sex marriage to assault a 17-year-old girl, police said...
...a man in his 20s holding a "Yes on 8" sign crossed the street and attacked a 17-year-old girl opposing the proposition, knocking her down and striking her in the head, San Mateo police Lt. Mike Brunicardi said.
A man then ran up and spit in the girl's face...
Ugh
One of the drawbacks to representative democracy is the potential for the tyranny of the majority over minorities. Most democracies protect against that outcome by enshrining minority rights in a constitution, and making that constitution stronger than the 50-percent-plus-one majority of the electorate.
What kind of fucked up system does California have that can impose a constitutional denial of rights (most constitutions confer rights, not deny them) based on the votes of 5 million people(out of >22M eligible voters)?
It's sad to live in a state which has now written my status into the constitution as that of a second class citizen. I am equal, despite what the bigots say. The rest of the country gets to celebrate this wonderful new era, a turning of a page, and we're still riding the back of the bus.
I am sorry, Queso. I'd say come here, but frankly you're better off where you are by a country mile.
It's outrageous that people are still against this. It's two consenting adults who are trying to make their relationship more stable! Stability is important in community!
When I was researching this topic I came across this rather good quote from a gay Liberal (conservative party in Australia) MP - Mark Brindal - when he proposed the Civil Unions Bill 2004 in October 2004:
"Same sex attracted people make invaluable contributions to society, and society can no longer afford the hypocrisy to deny them the right to formalise their relationships."
In Australia every state has different laws regarding same sex marriages - and it seems that a national register of relationships deal is in the works to cover all non bog standard (and also) husband and wife deals.
Well, some good news, some bad. Progress is always halting, and always behind where it should be. Someday soon...
i've been moved to create a series of t-shirts and such with my response to the passage of Prop 8- buy one now!
That's a great damn logo, cheese. I love the > over the !=. That alone on a tee without the verbiage would be awesome, too.
that's a good idea, mct, i might just try a couple of those...
Hateful bastards. (Those who voted yes, I mean).
I hope this gets overturned immediately.
thanks again, MCT, have another look- i remixed a little... i think you're right about being less text-heavy.... and one of these days, i will come a-calling with a tin of moustache wax for Jack...
Yeah, that's damn good work, Queso.
Jon Stewart recently made the valid point that Mormons should be the last group to seek a rigid definition of marriage. Fucking hypocrites.
eeQ, there's also ≠ (U+2260) and ≩ (U+2269), though the latter is a bit difficult at smaller sizes.
Hey Cheesey!
Let's get wed!
Just to piss 'em off.
The lawsuits already filed take the position that it's a revision rather than an amendment, and therefore should have gone through the legislature rather than direct to referendum.
outup for hitchin'!
