How much do you love your local public transportation?
Not as much as these kids, I'm betting! This made my day.

Funny!
-
It's loverly.

Great story, great pics. Thanks.

Like the pics and the nice family story... but I can only hope they don't end up like this kid

Is this an appropriate place to mention how distressed I am that they're remaking Pelham One Two Three? Denzel as Walter Matthau -- enh, maybe. Robert Shaw replaced by John Travolta -- you've got to be out of your fucking mind.

My 4 year-old routinely asks me to read his collection timetables to him (nothing funner than reading those out loud, "Saturday service, local trains depart every 12 minutes... 9:50 am, 10:02 am..."). There is a MTA System map taped to the wall over his bed. He has a collection of NYC subway cars that are compatible with his Thomas Wooden Railway layout. He cannot leave the house without his Metro card. He loves nothing more than to see the Q train. In riding the 7 train from Queens to Manhattan, I am required to hold him for the duration of the trip in the first car so that he can look out the front window and point out the various curves, signals, tunnels... Aaaaah... in other words, I can relate to this fine post!

I wish we had subways here. That's a gorgeous story. I suspect that kid #1 would be that way about buses if we had more to choose from. A trip on the bus is almost the ultimate treat for him -- and last week a bus came to his school and they went for a free ride around the block...and it passed our house. I think he almost died from the thrill.

This past winter, after a field trip, I polled several second and third graders as to what was their favorite part of the day's activities. "The bus ride!" was the unanimous response. We adults clearly are missing a hidden something in the thrill of transportation.
-
and I hereby unsend the phrase "I polled several second and third graders", for fear it will be quoted out of context.

I love publis transport now because it gets me to work, but as a kid (growing up in a small rural town where you had to drive to get to the nearest building other than your home) I was absolutely fascinated by it. I mean, you get on in one place, and you just automaticcally end up in another, without doing anything!
