Flickr I'm not sure if this is a social networking thing or a group weblog. I think it's probably the former. It's in Beta, and run by some bloke called Stuart. I've just joined up, and I'm having fun. (You don't need an invitation to join.)
  • I could probably figure out how to let their flash app talk through my firewall, but I'm too anti-social to think it'd be worth the hassle. He said, in a group weblog.
  • I signed up for this the other week. The interface seems nice and everything, but I didn't have any friends on there, so I can't really comment on how good it is. These social software things don't really interest me that much, but I expect you get out what you're willing to put in, or something.
  • Yeah, the fun lasted a day. Now the fact that I have no friends(!) makes it just another site to look at. Forget I mentioned it. (We need a way of cancelling posts.)
  • Crap. I just got the email "Update for Old Skool members" saying that after March 15th, a yahoo id will be required to sign in. Boo! Bah! *grumble*
  • Yeah I was a bit cranky about that too sugarmilktea. Yahoo is a bit of a pain.
  • Agreed. I'm not a fan of Yahoo at all, and I don't want to have to create a new account just for Flickr. How good is Google's photo manager?
  • Dunno never used it. Kinda entrenched in Flickr now, mushed into the community. And all my friends are there! I mean I have a Yahoo ID but it always bugs me how it keeps logging me out for security reasons, even though I have a static IP. *grumble, grumble*
  • Oh and how come I need to use a Yahoo ID for Flickr when I need a separate ID to use Yahoo Japan! Yeah answer me that people-who-are-completely-not-in-a position-to-do-so!
  • Because ..... of the ...... thing?
  • Ahh, the thing. Right.
  • Probably because the Japanese entities of bigger entities evolve into their own entities.
  • Not to mention that my company blocks yahoo in every essence of its form. I imagine that I'll have to log into my flickr account in some roundabout fashion while at work. And yeah, yahoo is a pain indeed. I'm not entrenched in the community myself, but after having shelled out for a pro account, I'm almost certain that I will not re-subscribe when it expires.
  • I've just had to do that yahoo thing too. Really fucked me off, but like gomi said I'm in too deep now man! Grrrr
  • What's so wrong with Yahoo? The only thing I was worried about was this - aren't all the cool 3rd party tools for Flickr dependent on the old id's? I need a Yahoo id anyway for my predigious Freecycling.
  • Ha ha ha. I knew this would happen. I left Flickr as soon as they announced that they had accepted Yahoo's offer.
  • Flickr is still super awesome, and having a yahoo id is not a big deal at all. I have one for messaging anyway, I never actually use the email account and everything is fine. I get unlimited uploads and bandwidth on Flickr which was super handy after my trip to Europe. I remember about 7 years ago when someone I knew took hundreds of rolls of film and then couldn't afford to develop them! I got to go through my pictures and upload them to Flickr to share with family and friends. I'm glad times have changed.
  • Wow. That totally sounded like spam and/or a sales pitch written by a 13 year old. My point is I don't understand what the whole hullaballoo is (aside from maybe access issues, but will merging your yahoo account with Flickr and then logging into flickr on their site using the yahoo account actually fall under blocked yahoo sites?) Welcome to the modern age. You're either going to be logging into google or yahoo or (god forbid) MS passport services for everything. /Merger Paranoia
  • I just have so many accounts all over the internet, most of which are inactive, and I'm trying to avoid opening new ones unnecessarily. Strangely enough, having to have a Google account doesn't bother me, when Yahoo and Google are essentially doing the same thing. Is this like the "Get a Mac" thing?
  • I have about a gazillion accounts around the place too. I use Yahoo for the JapanBloggers but I dunno feels weird to use it for flickr too cause I am like totally old skool there. I logged into my blogger account for the first time in about a year and they forced me to upgrade and use my google log in. This kind of stuff just messes with your mind....
  • What #1 and gomi said. will merging your yahoo account with Flickr and then logging into flickr on their site using the yahoo account actually fall under blocked yahoo sites? Via the flickr login page, the yahoo id method goes to login.yahoo.com, which has been effectively blocked by my company. I like to organize my photos when I have some downtime at work - - finding such spare time at home with two little kids is near impossible. Just sucks. That is all. And I do have a yahoo account already, but it has been rendered virtually inoperable for the past year, much to my chagrin (all of the old emails between my wife and I from the early beginnings of our relationship). I try to log in every couple weeks or so, but I always get the "We're experiencing a temporary problem in accessing your account. Please refresh the page, or try again later." Yeah, the damned address book still works, but the stuff I want is seemingly gone. Happened out of the blue one day and has continued since...
  • > Via the flickr login page, the yahoo id method goes to login.yahoo.com, which has been effectively blocked by my company. Would portable Firefox on a USB key along with stored cookies work?
  • I must derail here and comment that sugarmilktea's kids are very cute!
  • Aww, thanks, gomi! But how did you figure... oh, must have been the fridge thread!
  • shhhh don't ruin my sleuthing reputation...
  • What, did I say somethin'? *trifles through thread and pretends nothing happened*
  • Oh, and I forgot to add - - - nice photoset yourself! *wink* *wink*
  • (^_^)
  • Oh man, I searched for a flickr-related post, and found this. Wow. So old. Anyway, I have a flickr question that wasn't worth making a new post about. A fairly normal photo of me (fully clothed) had been favourited by another member, and when I clicked on their username, it turned out that person collects nude photos (NSFW, most certainly) from all over flickr. I don't know why this person has favourited my photo, but I don't like it. It's icky. Should I just ignore it?
  • Icky indeed! Don't just ignore it, this is full-on creepy. I'd suggest that you at least Block this weirdo.
  • That's perfect, islander. I didn't think I'd be able to do that so I didn't look. Cheers!
