Incredibly cool house
...that cost less than $1,000 to build, will last 500+ years, and even before you click, I'm telling you this:
YOU WANT
-
*WANTS*
-
I'm all about the rammed earth (baby) but I'd prefer a more trad Scandi cottage look. Bit too cod igloo for my liking.
-
Think function. People pay more than this (way more) to build a detached garage, work shed, barn, etc. So it could be a great way to turn your acreage into a serious cult compound.
-
500 years? Must be made of plastic. DO NOT WANT! OK, now I'm going to read the article. Hmmm... "Flexible Form Rammed Earth", aka sandbags. DO NOT WANT!!
-
woven polypropylene I KNEW THE WAS PLASTIC INVOLVED!!!
-
I like dirt.
-
Playing in dirt is fun.
-
Cool idea, but I don't think I'd like to spend much time inside a 40 ton hut built with free labor.
-
A poor-man's Wenkel tower perhaps? Ralph, I trust that you are fortifying the compound!
-
I don't see how this is superior to good old gingerbread.

I'm rather fond of Chapel of Reconciliation in Berlin, Germany. It's the first rammed earth (or pise technique) in the city and it commemorates the 10 anniversary of the wall coming down. It sits on the former no-man's land and is made out of pieces of the church that was destroyed to provide a clear firing line. A brief video tour can be found here: Earth Architecture.
