Mix-tape For Water Boarding- Music has been used in American military prisons and on bases to induce sleep deprivation, "prolong capture shock," disorient detainees during interrogations—and also drown out screams. Based on a leaked interrogation log, news reports, and the accounts of soldiers and detainees, here are some of the songs that guards and interrogators chose.

  • I remember a year or so ago, hearing some bonehead from Metallica being interviewed on NPR (probably on Frrrreshhh Air), informed that their music was being used in this fashion. I seem to recall his attitude was: "Dude! Cool." Sigh. Rage Against the Machine? Could we please get more ironic? How about "AWOL" by Paris? Or "Spiderhole" by Euphrates?

IIRC, it was the interviewer who joked about it and then the Metallica guy joined in. It was an uncomfortable moment. But one point he did make was that heavy metal music is used is because it is relentless. And you would go insane after listening to it for prolonged periods of time.
