A 1913 article about the brand spanking new and shiny Panama Canal.
Currently the canal is being widened, because the Panamax supertankers, built especially to maximise tonnage while using the Panama Canal, just aren't big enough any more. The expansion will double the canal's capacity, which is currently 14,000 vessels annually.

I'm working on a show about Panama right now. Interesting factoid: Average toll per ship per passage- in excess of $100,000 USD

will it feature david lee roth flying through the air i hope?

Another surprise: the digging that is the result of the widening operation is actually a boon to biologists and geologists who are benefitting from the massive excavation to further their work. An unlikely seeming side benefit.

That is all kinds of cool.
