Ah, yer've gladdened me filthy little monkey heart, Hank lad!
-
A sequel to The Hobbit? Haven't we seen that one already?
-
I wondered about that, too - my completely uninformed guess is that they'll split the book into two movies.
-
Yes, it appears that the book will become two movies. This makes sense both from perspective of keeping as much in the films from the book as possible, and profit wise.
-
I've got to tell you, I don't think the Hobbit has nearly the cinematic potential that Lord of the Rings had. I mean, I'll go, midnight opening night, (just like I did for the other 3 movies) and I'll love it, but it just isn't as good a story. Commence to bashing me with sticks.
-
Yeah it is, it's got a dragon.
-
Two five-hour movies, no doubt. My ass can't sit in a theatre seat long enough to watch another Peter Jackson film.
-
"...Those fuckin' hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of people walking to a fucking volcano..."
-
yes, BUT IT'S GOT A DRAGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ewww, I don't like hairy feet.
-
Dragon vs. Donkey Show... Hmm. I'm gonna hafta go with the mule.
-
I don't see what this has to do with Batman.
-
The second movie will actually be based on other Tolkien reference material not in The Hobbit or LOTRs books. It will be a bridge between the two stories. And I'm with you Capt Renault., if that was in fact your quote. If not, then a I claim temporary insanity. Maybe I'll just do that anyway.
-
Oh that's easy. Christopher Walken.
-
cite, monkeylion?
-
Not mine. From something I found much more entertaining than LOTR.
-
monkeylion's right, and I'm trying to dig up a citation now. It's actually in the press release in the article you linked -- they specifically say "MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, “The Hobbit” and a sequel to “The Hobbit.”" That's not the same thing as "The Hobbit" stretching across two films.
-
"PETER JACKSON AND FRAN WALSH TO EXECUTIVE PRODUCE TWO FILMS BASED ON 'THE HOBBIT'" Two films based on The Hobbit. It's probably too early to parse this bullshit press release, but I read that as The Hobbit split into two films. AICN are *speculating* about Book of Lost Tales type stuff making up the second movie, but AICN are always full of shit. It makes more sense to turn The Hobbit into two movies, so you get to use all of the material from the book (which wouldn't fit into a single movie) and the profit from two movies. As someone noted on another forum, split it to start the 2nd movie at Beorn's, "That way you have the Goblins under the mountain and the rescue by the Eagles to end the first film, and the Battle of 5 armies to end the second."
-
Year-old cite, but it mentions the other source material.
-
Sadly, no mention of how awesome the new Batman movie looks.
-
What was the lawsuit over, anyway?
-
Money.
-
Hopefully there will be goats in this one. Entirely too few goats in the first movies.
-
What was the lawsuit over, anyway? Pipe-weed.
-
From Aint It Cool.com http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35108 "One will be an adaptaion of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT. The second project is believed to be a bridge between THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy - culled from the titanic amount of periphery/ancillary/notated material found in Tolkien's works. Such material can already be seen in the exiting films."
-
see my comments on AICN above.
-
Entertainment Weekly article released just before this announcement also states that Jackson's vision is for the second film to take place after The Hobbit and before LOTR. Oh, Hank, you're just so totally pwned. I mean, like in the mouth. *makes ass-slappy pony-ridey gesture*
-
And another article that backs it up. *makes rumpy-pumpy hip gesture, high-fives Invisible Jesus*
-
I still got that photoshop to be doin, laddy.
-
OK, Variety says it is TWO films made from the Hobbit book. Sam Raimi *probably* to direct. Evidence for two movies from the one book: the wording of the press release, and the fact that the movies will be shot back to back. you don't shoot movies back to back if they're two different films, wouldn't make any sense and wouldn't be any advantage to it. Ipso facto, The Hobbit is a two parter. /blows raspberry (they make more money from two movies rather than just one.. think about it)
-
Wait. The Eagles are going to be in this? Are they still going?
-
Again, the press release sentence I quoted above states specifically it will be The Hobbit and a sequel. WE WILL SEE WHO IS RIGHT, AND WE WILL SEE THAT THE PERSON WHO IS RIGHT IS THE PERSON WHO IS NOT YOU, BUT ME.
-
I WILL MAKE YOU LOOK NOT SO HANDSOME IN YOUR PHOTOSHOP, PRETTY BOY!!!!
-
Won't take you long then. Have you seen his grid? Guffaw
-
'Guffaw'? You been reading the Beano again?
-
Don't diss the Beano, or I'll get all Mini the Minx on yo ass.
-
The LOTR/Tintin connection
-
Way to go, koko...now you're gonna get Renault all over the thread.
-
I DON'T KNOW WHERE MY INDIGNATION BEGINS!!!
-
Clearly, Cappy wants a blink tag for Christmas.
-
Additional spooky MoFi connection - on that page was a link to the Cadbury Go Gorilla ad.
-
mct -- Did you see the new Dark Knight preview? Unbelievable. It is available online. I saw it in theatres, and wet my pants.
-
I just came in here to say two things: New Tolkien movie! W00t! and I love you guys to bits. Seriously. *hugs*
-
mct -- Did you see the new Dark Knight preview? Unbelievable. It is available online. I saw it in theatres, and wet my pants. That, and this, and oh dear God why isn't it July yet.
-
No Christian Bale in that preview. FAIL.
-
Christian Bale in this preview, you hussy.
-
Dragon Feathers
-
Dark Night? Dark night of the bleedin' soul, innit.
-
That might of worked if a) I had bothered to find out what the film actually is, and b) not stuffed up the spelling. Arse biscuits.
-
Guillermo del Toro in line for The Hobbit
-
I am very much in favor of that idea. So much more so than Raimi.
-
Hmm, that link says the second movie will be "a prequel which bridges the gap between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, using Tolkien’s lengthy appendices as source material". Does that count as a sequel, mct?
-
I know what would be fun, if we list the actors we think would be good in the various roles.
-
Liam Neeson as Bilbo Baggins.
-
Hank as that dude who always gets stuff wrong.
-
Danny Devito as the Bobo Baggins guy Heather Graham as The Naked Elf Salma Hayek as The Busty Bartender Scarlett Johanssen as the Girl Who Can't Find Her Shirt ...I could go on...
-
I think I'm getting a resentment. Can't be sure, but I think so... /serenity prayer /booze
-
Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct back-to-back installments of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit". Why are all directors beardies?
-
No time to shave!
-
del Toro... this could be good. /resumes ritual "this had better not suck" chant
-
Guillermo Del Toro Eyes Marvel's Dr. Strange
-
del Toro confirmed to direct The Hobbit
-
Fuck YES!
-
Seriously, del Toro is pretty much the only director I can think of off hand that will make this thing work.
-
I concur.
-
So I've heard.
-
That will be a thing of beauty. I adored Pan's Labyrinth.
-
I too am excited about this. GDT is probably my fav presently active director. I have to say I am personally more excited about the promised At The Mountains Of Madness tho!!!
-
ARRIBA!!!!!!! in Elvish
-
Ian McKellen back as Gandalf Yays!
-
Superb.
-
Would Ian Holm as Biblo be too much to ask? Yeah, he's older now, but he was always supposed to look "well preserved" anyhow... Ah, forget it. It's probably going to be Vern Troyer...
-
I guess they could bring Elijah Wood in as Bilbo, with a little aging makeup. There's not too much of an actual physical resemblance, but I think in the audience's mind the family connection would bridge the gap.
-
I was thinking about this, but Elijah is a bit weird and other-worldly-looking. It works for Frodo; I'm not sure about for Bilbo.
-
We need someone middle aged, a sedentary physique, and the barest hint of a rascal gleam in his eye.
-
True, but I don't know if middleclasstool is available.
-
Hey, if you take a look at my feet, you'll see they're perfectly Hobbit-like.
-
Legal path clear for Hobbit movie: A film version of JRR Tolkien's novel The Hobbit is to go ahead after its producers settled a legal row with the author's heirs.
-
Guillermo Del Toro departs “The Hobbit”
-
Oh, poo.
-
Hmmm, his original commitment was for 3 years, and he's been there two. The movies are supposed to be out in '12 & '13, so he'd have had to stay 4-5 years. Makes me wonder if there was more to it...
-
The Hobbit in Under 2 Minutes
-
Might be longer.
-
Grar! Want Hobbit!
-
Off again, and now it's on again.
-
They're not saying where it's going to be filmed, though. Considering the record investment, I doubt they would risk using actors who would hold up production in any way.
