Curious George:
If you live in one of the Canadian Maritime Provinces, what hockey team do you root for?
-
Is it not that if you live in the Maritimes, you root for the Habs, or possibly Boston, but if you're from the Rock, you go for the Leafs because of the Baby Leafs team in St. John's? I stand to be corrected...
-
Traditionally, the Leafs. But you probably don't need that kind of heartache, so take your pick. Just not Ottawa.
-
Wouldn't the subsequent move of the Baby Leafs to Toronto a year after St. John's built them a new arena nullify that? Just another taxpayer milking, courtesy of MLSE.
-
Eons ago, the local Halifax hockey team was the Voyageurs, which I *think* was a farm team for the Habs. At that time it was traditional to root for Montreal, but there was a large group of Trawna fans, too. Now in Halifax the home team is the Mooseheads, so whoever they are a farm team for is probably a favourite. One also sees a fair number of Calgary Flames bumperstickers about. Disclaimer: I obviously know very little about sports of any kind, especially those involving lots of spitting and whacking. But I think the name "Gump Worsley" is just about the most Seussian name in hockey history.
-
The Gumper was the last of a now-dead breed. Long after the invention and near-universal adoption of the goalie mask, he refused to wear one; standing up to 100mph slapshots with his bare face.
-
Stands to reason it's a now-dead breed, then, innit! But back to the question: honestly, mlis, I think there are only maybe three or four Maritimers on Mofi, so you may be out of luck getting answers on this. There used to be a map on the mythical MoFi Wiki, but I can't find it now. Or the map.
-
I've been living in the Maritimes (N.S) for a little over 6 years now (plus about 3 years in NF some 15 years ago or so)... however, I don't follow hockey anymore since the only team that ever mattered, the Montreal Canadiens, became just an average team. I just don't see how anyone could ever root for another team...
-
Aww, man! I didn't know until just now that Gump had died! Rest easy, Gump. They don't make 'em like you anymore. They've got a whole system in place to make sure of that...
-
Thanks for the answers fish tick and everyone else!
-
I just recently moved to the maritimes, and I find a pretty even mix between Habs and Leafs fans. The occasional Sens fan appears, but they make him walk the plank.

I don't follow hockey anymore since the only team that ever mattered, the Montreal Canadiens, became just an average team. They're doing pretty good so far, with a lot of hockey to go. And if you don't root for them in the bad times, you don't deserve to root for them in the good ones! And as a Sabres fan, I can agree... Just not Ottawa.
-
psst, curieux, it's NL, not NF, my pa c'rected me on it t'other day, b'y.
-
There is nothing wrong with being a fan of the Sens (not that I'd walk down that alley), but if you're from TO and you're a fan of the Leafs... well, I hope you're sterile. If you're from the Maritimes and you root for the Leafs, that's pretty much par for the dollar. The reason that it's Leafs and not Leaves, by the way, is because it's short for Leafblowers. You know, those wind machines that run on gas. I think they also have a suck setting. As seen on TV.

Highly dubious! /Martin
