The amero conspiracy. "The North American Union is a supranational organization, modeled on the European Union, that will soon fuse Canada, the United States, and Mexico into a single economic and political unit. The details are still being worked out by the countries' leaders, but the NAU's central governing body will have the power to nullify the laws of its member states. Goods and people will flow among the three countries unimpeded, aided by a network of continent-girdling superhighways. The US and Canadian dollars, along with the peso, will be phased out and replaced by a common North American currency called the amero...If you haven't heard about the NAU, that may be because its plotters have succeeded in keeping it secret. Or, more likely, because there is no such thing."
  • The American people would never go for it. They would steadfastly resist such a thing out of sheer pride. Unless their will had been sufficiently worn down by, say, a protracted morale sapping war, or demoralization by the artificially enduced collapse of the dollar.
  • made of FAIL. (The so-called "Amero Conspiracy". Not Hank's post.)
  • D'oh! Hawthorne's post. (That's not something I'd catch on preview.)
  • I've heard the right-wing radio guys going on about this -- so-called NAFTA superhighways whose purpose is to make it easier to create a mobile, and probably illegal, workforce that's endlessly shuffled from South to North and back again. Those radio guys are funny. They're funny, right? They couldn't possibly *mean* what they're sayi... Oh.
  • BLACK HELICOPTERS
  • It's not just the radio guys, though. I've seen Dobbs and Beck both harp on it on CNN (oh, how CNN has fallen...)
  • I heard the Amero - the new dollar - will be orangey-pink (or possibly pinkey-orange) and have a Unicorn on one side and a picture of Alex Trebek on the other. It's true.
  • Ok, but how do you feel about the notion of "whatever these guys need to believe in order to help lefty-me oppose NAFTA et al"? On the one hand I'm a little happy to have an ally. But on the other, I can't help but be afraid that one day they'll find an equally wacky (to me) reason to believe something completely different about it.
  • You know, I've heard a lot of people put this conspiracy theory in terms of how the American people would never go for it. What about the Canadians? Canada is essentially the anti-American state: founded in opposition to the American revolution, cemented, in large part, as a defensive bulwark against American invasion. Many Canadians see Canadian nationalism as inextricably linked to opposition of American individualism in favour of Canadian collectivism ('Peace, Order and Good Government', as opposed to 'Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness'). Perhaps the right-wing American opponents of this 'conspiracy' could be assured that any Canadian political party that embraced such a plan would face not only electoral suicide, but also the defection of most of its members.
  • I can't get past the fact that "Amero" sounds like a new model of SUV.
  • I keep thinking of this stuff.
  • On this side of the border, the right-wing/libertarian Fraser Institute and the conservative, corporate-funded CD Howe Institute, among others, predictably support the Amero. As Dreadnought says however, there is also much suspicion about the issues surrounding North American Union in general.
  • Ah the Fraser Institute... This may be something only those intimately familiar with Canadian political history will understand, but a while ago I saw a flyer for a set of lectures being given by the Fraser Institute. One of those lectures was called something like: - Native Residential Schools: an Example of Why the Government Can't be Trusted to Run Public Programmes Then, a few lectures down, on the same page they had: - The Case for Why Religions Institutions Should Run Social Programmes Oh we laughed and we laughed. And then we cried.
  • Canada is essentially the anti-American state Yeah, it always unnerves me that three-quarters of Canada's population lives within 90 miles of the US border.... just sitting there....waiting.... to INVADE.
