Flight of the Conchords,
an HBO sitcom (also playing on BBC4) staring the comedy band of the same name (the fourth fifth most popular folk parody duo in NZ) as struggling musicians in New York City. And for all those of us without HBO (or a tv) -

clips from YouTube highlighting the irresistable combination of deadpan comedy and spontaneous crooning (and every other style).

I saw this the other day on BBC4, pretty much by accident, and went from slightly-drunk-lolling-on-the-sofa to sitting up straight I-am-in-the-presence-of-genius in the first ten minutes. If it keeps up over the whole series, it will become legend.

My rhymes are bottomless...

Jemaine also did a couple of commercials for Outback Steakhouse that were pretty funny. Capitalizing of course on the fact that 98.2% of Americans can't distinguish an Aussie accent from a Kiwi.
-
I had figured these guys were already huge in the US. Jemaine also has a movie out in NZ called Eagle Vs Shark which seems to consist a lot of geeky deadpan comedy but no music. It looks good. The humans are dead. (I confirm that they are dead.) The humans are dead. (I poked one; it was dead.)

I could quote songs all morning. You're so beautiful, you could be a part time model, but you should probably keep your normal job. Also, Bret was an elf in LotR. His fans call him Figwit, short for "Frodo is great...who is THAT?!?"
-
Ah, thanks, I'm not crazy. I thought that was him.
-
Once again, I am not in sync with the popular crowd. I saw about half of an episode in a hotel room and got bored. Desperate Polygynists, which had been on before it, was more captivating, in a car wreck kind of way. This seemed more like a bumper car with the power turned off.
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but man, it was just dull. -
I was completely hooked by the TV series. These guys are awesome. I can hardly wait for Season Two.
-
That looks fantastic. I don't get HBO or BBC4. Thanks for showing me the really awesome show I can't watch, jb. Thanks. Great post! Really. THANKS A LOT.

They have TV up there in the 51st state?

They have TV up there in the 51st state? Watch it, junior. My dollar can beat up your dollar.

I could get really Pepsi Blue, and point out that the first season is available on DVD. Of course, it's $20 USD at Amazon.com and $30 CND at Amazon.ca, despite the fact that the dollars are worth the same now. (and £20 in the UK - mother'ucking price disparities). Or I could point out that it is also available via something that begins with b and ends with "ittorrent". (That would be the anti-pepsi blue). I haven't decided if I can wait until I get to the US or not.
-
Ah, but if it's on DVD, that probably means it's available to rent from my friendly neighborhood video store. Thanks, lady! I take back all the horrible things I said about you to my spouse.
-
Again with the spouse. Why you teasing minx!
-
Someone reminded me today about Tripod, an Australian group that are similar in style (at least by this one song, anyway).
-
And of course, Canada's contribution would be The Arrogant Worms.
-
I can understand why USians don't understand NZ humour. There's no laugh track.

-
yegads! did you just enable that for like, 10 seconds or something?

Nuh-uh, I do what I want. Admin priviledges, you know.

Is it the fabled server-side ?

That's fucking hilarious.

I saw this today. Its brilliant, I think, although obviously it might go shit Its a bit like The Mighty Boosh without the animal whimsy and the narcissism
-
I am SOOOOOO jealous of that blink!

Some more new + good comedy playing on the BBC: The Peter Serafinowicz Show, playing Thursday nights on beeb 2. It might have been the wine, but I LOLed and LOLed at his Al Pacino. This is the guy who did the shipping forecast in an episode of Black Books. He's also appeared in Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and various other British productions. He voiced Darth Maul in Episode I, but I don't hold it against him. His wikipedia and imdb entries.

ZOMG what a great show! Why didn't you guys tell me about this?? *giggles, watches again* Hee hee! Hiphoppopotamus!
