You'd think the original designers would have caught this. The Navy facility at Coronado is in for some re-designing. via
  • Wouldn't this have shown up on the blueprints?
  • That was my thought. According to the article, they didn't catch it until after they'd broken ground. Even at that late a date, though, they really should have made some modifications.
  • uh... d'oh? I'm hoping they missed it because they just weren't thinking in those terms. Sometimes when you're up to your elbows in a project your focus narrows. Unfortunate though.
  • Navy officials say the shape of the buildings, designed by local architect John Mock, was not noted until after the groundbreaking in 1967 -- and since it was not visible from the ground, a decision was made not to make any changes. Sounds like John may have been doing some Mock-ing of his own. Reminds me of the Monty Python architect sketch.
  • Look hard enough, and you can find them everywhere.
  • What are these people doing looking at satellite photos of military bases, hmm?
  • It's not far from that fancy hotel. The one with the cool toilets that was in that movie.
  • Conclusion: Architect John Mock is a nazi. 'In a November 2006 San Diego CBS television station report, architect John Mock, who designed the structures in question, stated that "We knew what it [the building complex] was going to look like".'
  • 'Architect John Mock actually designed the buildings back in the late 1960s. Even now, he stands behind them, pointing out the buildings are not actually connected, and therefore not a swastika. "We knew what it was going to look like, but it isn't that," Mock said. 'It's 4 "l" shaped buildings looking at it from the ground or the air, it still is." Mock won architectural awards for the design, which he says maximizes space, and was so forward thinking that the buildings are still used today, almost 40 years later. "Plus we met the budget," Mock said.' Conclusion: media beat-up
  • I can find nothing on this Mock. But I feel certain he believes the Jews are using the Blacks as muscle.
  • I think he met budget by leaving off some pieces. The plans look quite different.
  • The Jews aren't the enemy anymore. Now we try to help 'em -- rebuild the temple, breed a perfect red heifer, and whatnot. /massive Godwin
  • /massive Godwin-meets-Christian right. You know what i mean.
  • *doesn't know what HW means*
  • *doesn't know what he means, either*
  • Maybe Mock was mocking the military? It was the sixties, after all.
  • "We knew what it was going to look like" Yup, the cabal was all for it!
  • If you ask me, Google Earth has caused too much trouble already.
  • Not everyone would find this building offensive.
  • These girls simply adore it!
  • One of my local favorites. It's in a theater, and the cow skulls have red lights in them that eerily glow as the house lights go down. Quite an effect, really.
  • Is that just before the ritual slaughter begins? I think I caught it in the West End. I bought a jumper but the programmes were so overpriced!
  • Symbolism makes me wretch. It's the same thinking that gets offended by the sentance "these people are fucking dying" for the wrong reasons.
  • ManWoman? yes, all my links are from achewood. just deal.
  • I hope that when they redesign it, it's in the shape of a burning cross. "What?! What now??"
  • No linking to this host Huh. I thought the whole point of waffle images is that it hosts images... :(
  • Images uploaded to WaffleImages are meant for a final destination on the website http://forums.somethingawful.com and certain related sites. Hotlinking from any other website is an offense equal to a breach of the above terms. Ten yard penalty!
  • Mmmmm, waffles...
  • doh.
  • It'd be cool to do a blog entry covering various swastikas still present in architecture, but I'm not sure I'd like where the traffic came from.
  • There's an old (as in maybe 1900, probably more like 1920-1930) brick house in one of the upper-class type neighbourhoods here in Christchurch that's on one of the major roads into the city, and when you pass it, you see a single swastika in darker brick on the chimney. I always wondered what the deal is.
  • It's just a plus sign doing cartwheels!
  • Heheh. Well done TUM!
  • My mom has a pre-WWII Coleman stove, all gas. Beautiful enamel work. If you look very close, there are little swastikas on all the knobs that adjust the flame. At the time, just a symbol. It is a shame such a wonderful symbol for peace has been so permanently ruined.
  • Na, it's four Ls square dancing. Do se do you little nazis!
  • I found a comment on boing-boing that has a link to a zoomed out version of the image, here. It actually turns out to look like two planes about to bomb the swastika which, puts a little different twist to the whole shebang. . .

I always wondered what the deal is. Swastikas were good-luck symbols, often included in architecture, an used by many cultures. But those nazis had to come and ruin that symbol for everyone...
  • They increased it's brand exposure
  • A post on The Swastika Laundry in Dublin. I remember the building. The blog post has the dates wrong, I think. Comment 9 on the post puts the closing date around 1987, which makes sense to me.
  • A long wikipedia page on use of the swastika
  • Fascinating links, everyone. This is what MonkeyFilter is about!
