• Ah, brings back fond memories of my old Jonsie. He loved to eat corn on the cob. He would finish an entire ear at one sitting.
• My kind of post. That cantaloupe cat looks like an amalgamation of most of the cats I've ever owned.
• Well, it is new to me, & I've known a lot of cats. I've known cats that like bread, raw dough, cake, but never melon. They do like eating vegetable matter on occasion though, such as grass, but I always thought that was to make themselves chuck up. Gotta keep cats away from marijuana, too, they will eat the shoots. I've also noticed that cats prefer drinking weird brackish water from puddles or pools outside rather than lovely clean fresh water in the bowl. Cats are weird.

• My cat eats sock lint off the floor.
• A fiend's cat loved to lick my hands whenever I visited... ah, that sandpapery tongue.

• The sock lint thing is called pica, I think.
• Hank, I think kit was just saying that his cats *looked* like that cat, not eating cantaloupe in the similar fashion. It's also new to me, though, my present cat likes to eat EVERYTHING - edible or not. Some things I've had to physically pull from his mouth thus far: *rubber bands *chunk of parmesan reggiano *action figure *small rock *beach sandal *cable from the computer mouse And yes, I think he's got pica. He also seems be quite fond of Cheez-it Twisterz. He likes to steal them from the kiddies.
• I have no cat. But my fish eat fish food. And each other.

• Those melons are a great source of Vitamin Squee! Mr. Whiskers has a sweet tooth for human ankles. And his sister is a big fan of peanuts and peanut butter.

• my cat liked melon, bananas, would come running for crunchy cheetos and had an indeterminate opinion re peanut butter. I think she like the taste but found the texture a bit troublesome...
• Our latest stray-who-came-to-dinner craves mashed potatoes. By the way way, have any of you seen weird coat changes? Our latest, Little Demon, started out blacker than black. It was pretty effective when he'd peer into the back glass door, with his green eyes begging for sanctuary. He stayed that way through the winter, and into the spring while he was deciding that we could be trusted. Lately, though, his colors have changed - The basic theme is still black/black, but areas of soft reddish- brown and light grey have begun to highlight his back and sides. His back pantelloons look like gray swashbuckling pants tucked into black boots. He kind of looks as though some Impressionist painter highlighted his contours. But, the weirdest thing is the triangular patch behind each ear. They appeared suddenly, and are white and a different texture from the rest of his fur - longer and curly. My theory is that that's where his demon horns will grow someday. My vet says that the dry food I buy from him "brings out their coats," and maybe that explains it, but I've never seen anything like it.
• yeah, my cat had the same thing. Reddish under-fur. Dubious about the diet being to do with it, with mine she'd get lighter patches after being in the sun, I think. There were gray felty bits as well, under her chin and shirt-front. Black cats either tend toward the blue or the red, I notice. I saw white patches in her tail, which I attributed to age. No idea about the appearance of that behind the ears on yourn.
• my little one loves the melon, but she also eats pineapple, green beans, seaweed, tortilla chips, berries, mango, zucchini bread, peanut butter, and the regular cat treats. The big one wants desperately to like human food but can't seem to manage it. They both love fish food and beg for it when the fish are being fed.
• I've got two strays-who-came-to-dinner, a mother and her kitten. I'll have to see if they like fruit and/or potatoes. The kitten is black except for a small white patch on her chest. I'll keep an eye on her color.
• Cats rule.
• Snoots also likes potato chips, and especially ham. I think all cats love ham though. One time, she found a big chunk of ham that had fallen under the kitchen counter. It was too big for her mouth and she kept dropping it as she tried to make off with it. weird coat changes? Funny you should mention it, because she's normally grey and white, but her coat on the sides is all brown now. We figure it's her summer undercoat.
• Your cat was probably black-on-black agouti.
• Ooooh, Kalico Kanga is such a pretty lady! And packed with personality, too, I bet.
• I've got a brother-and-sister cat team who, when nobody is around, tear open plastic bags of bird millet spray and eat it, drag it around the house, and basically get millet everywhere. They also enjoy other bird foods but are terrified of Turtle Bird, the Senegal parrot for whom it's intended. Turtle, meanwhile, has developed quite a taste for cat tail fur and will grab a beakful whenever it's within reach (no doubt why they're so bird-phobic).
• We used to have 2 little black and white cats called Ammy and Cassie. Unfortunately Cassie lived fast and died young but along the way she managed to massacre 2 bags of shopping that were waiting to be unpacked. Opened all the packets and took a bite out of every single thing. Was particulary unimpressed with aubergines. Small and fluffy with big "me do something wrong?" eyes. She got away with murder. Ammy was a rather plain cat who lived a long and quiet life. She had wonderfully elegant manners but did enjoy cheese and onion crisps when she could get them.
• At a family birthday last week, Mr. Whiskers jumped up and took a big lick of the frosted cake.
• He's so great.
• Our family cat Tibby took the opportunity, while all were snoozing after Xmas dinner, to lick the turkey dish off the edge of the kitchen table. That woke us up. She also used to "guard" the turkey while it defrosted.
• I had a cat named Tibby growing up! I also had a cat who loved to suck the insides out of tomatoes. I called him "Tomato Vampire". Sam, my old red cat, loves broccoli. When I get chinese food, she'll rush at me over and over like a vicious fuzzy mosquito until I either give her a piece of broccoli or she catches me off guard enough to steal one. She'll then drag it off and proceed to gnaw all the leaves off with her three remaining teeth. It may take her an hour to denude a broccoli stalk, but she loves them.

• Sounds like a fun project. I can't even brush my cat's coat, let alone get a cheek swab.
• P.S. I missed the post about Cerebellar Hypoplasia. I have a cat with that disease. She's amazing. Most CH kitties seem to be incredibly smart, and very adaptable. It's true that they're not in pain and have a normal life expectancy. It's also true that many vets don't understand the condition and advise the cats are put down. My cat is blind (a common complication of CH), and has absolutely no clue whatsoever that she's in any way different. She's happy, healthy, and is kneading my lap (and tipping over) as I type.
• Eee, Lara, CH cats are TOTALLY AWESOME! People should have to pay more to adopt one from the shelter, that's how great they are. I would absolutely get one, if I wasn't full up for cats at the moment. Any monkeys looking to adopt a dog or cat - please, seek out the ones with CH. You will not be sorry.

• Wow, homonculous! That post brought out the MeFi love in a huge way! And thanks for making it. So few people know about CH cats, and so many are at shelters waiting for a home and not getting adopted because people don't understand the condition. Every person I've ever talked to who has a CH cat describes them as having "a sunny personality", and mine is no different. (Don't get me wrong, she's still a cat, and being a cat, would kill you in your sleep if given the chance!)
