• Very interesting. I would have never really thought to bring gender into America's reaction to 9/11, but the author makes some good points.

• Hannah Duston, abducted as she lay in bed recovering from childbirth (while her husband fled), escaped after killing a family of Indians with a hatchet and taking their scalps. I told thee I was hardcore. More on King Philip's War (Metacom’s Rebellion), which I have to admit I'm not familiar with, which is disgraceful since I grew up there. If it was taught at all, it was probably seriously downplayed in favor of more heroic tales. Or I was daydreaming the whole time, which is entirely possible. I'll ask my brother, he took the honors courses (and lives in Lancaster!)
• According to Kokobro, the subject was touched on, as a lead-in to the more historically-significant French and Indian war. So, I was sort of right, and had probably only dozed off for a few minutes. Also, it's a much bigger deal in Lancaster, MA, where you can find Metacom Telecom, Wampanoag Wampum Payday Loans, Mary Rowlandson Elementary School, and King Philip's Candlepin Bowl-a-rama.

• For more King Philip hijinks and other fun genocidal goofups, I highly recommend this book, which I just finished. Quite an enlightening and depressing read.

• Huh! Just nearly ANY pioneer woman's diary. Most of those ladies were just as tough as the men, and did just as much, if not more, in a day. AND they did it in skirts! Remember who pulled the plow when the ox died? Then she had to go in and make supper.
