Madchester/sadchester:
Tony Wilson ... who set up Factory records and the Hacienda has died of cancer ... without him there would be no New Order or Happy Mondays. House music would probably not have taken off in the UK, and all round the world would be a poorer place.
He inspired a biopic - '24 Hour Party People' with the memorable tagline, 'Genius, Poet, Twat' ...

Quite apart from the all round fantasticness, from a selfish point of view, he didn't half make growing up in the northwest of England a lot more fun than it might have been.
-
That's far too young to go... Thanks Tony, and good speed.

. Can't say much more than that - very upsetting. A hero of mine. dickdotcom, just to be pedantic in a nice way, as Steve Coogan playing Wilson in the film said, "This is not a film about me, it's a film about the music, and the people who made the music." Or something. I remember the Hac well. It was dying of gang troubles. Shots on the dancefloor. Metal detectors and gangsters on the gate. And Factory records! Blimey, I'm going to have to play some vinyl when I get home. A bit of early ACR should do the trick...then some Durutti Column, then New Order, Joy Division.... *wells up, faints*

I remember being so ripped to the tits that my whole face was full of pins and needles and standing swaying in the queue for the Hacienda. I've never been so relieved to be waved in by a doorman in all my life. Good times, good times... He was a twat though. My sister admitted loving him this weekend, upon hearing of his death though, so he can't have been all bad.

Tell us more about your sister...

squeak. have the big boys stopped fighting now? Tony Wilson. What a lovely monster! He could come out with some nonsense but it was always entertaining and refreshingly passionate.
-
I feel sad to have never known of Tony Wilson. I shall do some research post-haste.

New Order, Happy Mondays bid farewell to 'Mr. Manchester' Anthony Wilson.
