The Los Angeles Times Homicide Blog "Jill Leovy strives to chronicle every homicide that occurs in L.A. County. Updated daily; comprehensive lists of victims are posted weekly."

Some good posts for context: What is The Homicide Report? Are there a lot of homicides in Los Angeles? Why does the Report talk about race?

  • Man. And I thought we had it bad here in Chicago .
  • I can't even imagine living in a place where the odds of being murdered were so high. Makes me feel less resentment toward my little city.
  • War zone
  • This is the city. Los Angeles, California. I work here...I carry a badge. The story you are about to see is true. No names have been changed, 'cause nobody's innocent.
  • That's one telling map.
  • Being poor can kill you here. Here's the one nearest my house: Orlando Ortega, 31, a Latino man, died of a gunshot wound at Sweetzer and Willoughby avenues in West Hollywood May 29. His time of death was listed as 11:54 p.m. Ortega was found lying in the street after neighbors heard gunfire. Detectives were left with little to go on. Anyone with information is asked to call Sheriff's Homicide at (323)890-5500.
  • goofyfoot: I initially wrote, "That's a great neighborhood, I'm really shocked by that." Then I checked the map, and saw that there was one murder within walking distance of my house not even a month ago. I live in Los Feliz, not a high-crime neighborhood at all.
  • Not to sound like an asshole, Bone, but where is it safe? I was raped in Santa Monica; my next-door neighbor was shot while waiting for his girlfriend in a car in West L.A (I think it was Brentwood, if it matters).

  • Oops. Sorry for the double.
