Curious George: Sooo, is there anyway I could play a song thru YouTube and record it somehow on my hard drive? I'm trying to learn the words and hold the key. I'm not trying to rip anybody off, but this piece is right for my (bad) voice. I can't carry a tune, but I haz a buckit!
  • You mean, how to keep a YT video on your machine, for off-line playback? I use KeepVid: paste YT's link there, download the resulting file, then use FLVLauncher to playback. I use OSX, but there's some FLV player for windows...
  • There's probably a million ways to do this. The way I would do it under Linux is use the trusty videodownloader extension for firefox to download the video from youtube to my computer. The result is a .flv video file which contains the audio as an mp3 track. Then I would use mplayer to dump the audio track with the command line: mplayer -dumpaudio -dumpfile audio.mp3 video.flv Both of these pieces of software will run under Windows AFAIK (dunno about Mac), but there may be something even niftier in the Windows world.
  • Also, if I were the type to have music files on my computer, which obviously I am not, you could email me and I could try to find the audio file.
  • If you're running OS X, you could use Audio Hijack.
  • You guys are so techno! I don't care about the video, just want the music. I thought I could handle Flag's KeepVid--that part was easy enough. But the FLVPlayer is buggy on my machine--I notice it's not really a bug, but a feature, according to this site. I'm so low tech I was just going to play the video and record it on my tape recorder, but it ate the tape and is now kaboogered. I got this recorder in 1978--can't understand why it didn't give up the ghost before now. Is there anyway I can play the vid and pick up the sound to record at the same time? Please use single syllable words and explain slowly.
  • Mmh, perhaps if you share the link of the YT, someone here could extract the audio and make it available to you in easy-to-use MP3 or quicktime... you're not a covert MPAA/RIAA spook, eh gramma?
  • I posted, but it didn't show,,hmm Try again,, here you go,,http://vixy.net/
  • If you're on a Mac, I recommend WireTap for audio capturing. The demo is fully-functional -- AIFF only, but still..
  • Democracy Player (beta)
  • I got it! I got it! Thanks to all you loverly monkeys, I can now wow the world with my tune. Ta, and a round of cockpunch for me mates.
  • So when do we expect a link to the mp3 file of you singing, GramMa?
  • Doubt that, Lara. Your best bet is to do a monkey meet-up in Boise, get me totally sloshed at a karaoke bar and then prepare to regret the plane fare you spent getting here.
