Lloyd Alexander died a few days ago. Washingon Post obituary, NY Times. The author of many books, I kept my (well thumbed) set of The Chronicles of Prydain alongside my Narnia series.

A brief bio and obituary in The Horn Book, plus their 1965 review of The Black Cauldron and the author's letter in reply.

  • Now that is sad news. I remember, as a nipper, staying up all night reading the Prydain books and becoming somewhat obsessed. Though it's true I re-read a couple of them a few years ago, and found them not quite suited to my adult literary sensibilities, it still feels like a loss. Maybe I'll give them another go. Nice set of links, too. Thanks.
  • I love love love the Vesper Holly books. Those are the first books I remember feeling sad at the end simply because the books were done -- I wanted them to be twice as long as they were.

  • Sad news. I loved the Prydain books when I was in grade school, and never stopped loving them. RIP.

  • . and I also loved the Vesper Holly books, even though they were extremely quick reads for me. They were just so much fun that I'd go back and read them over again.
