Jersey wants a national anthem
and has launched a competition to find one. Besides the theme tune from Bergerac, the main serious contenders are Ma Normandie(mp3) and Hedley Le Maistre's Jersey, mon vie.
But the field is still wide open - how often do you get the chance to write a national anthem?

While we're about it, I'd like to plug my inactive (i.e. I rant about it in the pub occasionally) campaign to make the Archers Theme Tune the new English national anthem. Or the English anthem. The current one is very dull, and the Scots and Welsh have nice ones.

You woke up this morning Got yourself a gun, Mama always said you'd be The Chosen One. She said: You're one in a million You've got to burn to shine, But you were born under a bad sign, With a blue moon in your eyes. You woke up this morning All the love has gone, Your Papa never told you About right and wrong. But you're looking good, baby, I believe you're feeling fine, (shame about it), Born under a bad sign With a blue moon in your eyes. You woke up this morning The world turned upside down, Thing's ain't been the same Since the Blues walked into town. But you're one in a million You've got that shotgun shine. Born under a bad sign, With a blue moon in your eyes. When you woke up this morning everything you had was gone. By half past ten your head was going ding-dong. Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes, like a voice telling you there was something you should know. Last night you were flying but today you're so low - ain't it times like these that make you wonder if you'll ever know the meaning of things as they appear to the others; wives, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. Don't you wish you didn't function, wish you didn't think beyond the next paycheck and the next little drink' Well you do so make up your mind to go on, 'cos when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone. When you woke up this morning, When you woke up this morning, When you woke up this morning, Mama said you'd be the Chosen One. When you woke up this morning, When you woke up this morning, When you woke up this morning, You got yourself a gun.

Virginia had some sort of contest to have a state song. One of my favorite groups, Eddie From Ohio, submitted a song. They did not win, but here it is: you think you'll find some mountains in western colorado fifty weeks of snowy peaks is where you're gonna be but babe the rocky mountains are gradually eroding the hills of coors are nothing more than blue ridge wannabes a turkey on it's belly a chicken on it's back anyway you look at it you'll find her on the map she revels in the seasons shakes hands with the north hugs the land of dixie while dancing on the porch you think that autumns in new england are the greatest of them all but give me sweet virginia for the fireworks of fall the prettiest october in all the fifty states just drive up to the skyline park the car and wait so grow up colorado excuse me tennessee if you don't mind, north caroline here's where i want to be (chorus) when you're talking home you mean the old dominion just southeast of heaven to the surf and the hills she's the best of thirteen sisters and thirty seven more sweet sweet virginia always keeps an open door they're fiddlin' in galax pickin' up in floyd and in the land of patsy cline they're songs you can't avoid when you're walking back after midnight i'll fall to pieces, too i'm crazy back in baby's arms with sweet dreams of you they're sailing down in norfolk skiing up in bryce climbing up the devil's stairs against the ranger's advice they're harvesting in loudoun to shenandoah winds and in the land near washington they're rooting for the 'skins fight for old d.c. so grow up colorado excuse me tennesse if you don't mind, north caroline here's where i want to be (chorus) pack up your impala and make your move out west past the blue ridge mountains you'll find you passed the best and when your dreams have ended where mountains are concerned me and sweet virginia will await for your return (chorus)

To keep on the wrong-Jersey theme, I always thought Paul Simon's (or Bach's rather) America would be an OK anthem, and it does have a Jersey reference in there, albeit just to the Turnpike, but is there anything more to Jersey than the Turnpike? (Medusa, I keed, I keed.) As for the right-Jersey, I know too little about it to make a suggestion. The only Channel island I know reasonably well is Guernsey, of course, and they already have an anthem.

I guess it's up to me to do this: SHOT THROUGH THE HEART AND YOU'RE TO BLAME (Darlin') YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME There's yer Jersey anthem right there.

Jersey will only ever have one TRUE anthem. . . In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american dream At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines Sprung from cages out on highway 9, Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line Baby this town rips the bones from your back Its a death trap, its a suicide rap We gotta get out while were young `cause tramps like us, BABY WE WERE BORN TO RUN!!!! ~THE BOSS
