David Halberstam 1934 - 2007 David Halberstam [wikipedia] was an American journalist and author . He wrote about sports and politics [nytimes]. He had some masterfull things to say about the role of journalists and how they may not be living up to that now. He died [nytimes] yesterday at the age of 74.

Some links via Glenn Greenwald [salon] who has more articles and more to say about him and journalism today.

  • Quite a national treasure. My wife got one of his books on baseball, and it's around here somewhere. Have to go find it now. .
  • He did a real hatchet job on Patrick Ewing for ESPN. I think ThatOtherFilter linked to it yesterday. It was really unfair, like he was after Ewing, who always played his hardest and was a great player, on a personal vendetta. It was weird. I've read a couple of his books, and enjoyed them, though. Big irony is that it was a Berkeley journalism school student who was in the other car. Nice FPP.
  • Nicely FPP'd Uncle. I need to add some of his books to the ol' readin' pile.
  • Fascinating read, Uncle. And I really needed to hear this today: "One of the things I learned, the easiest of lessons, was that the better you do your job, often going against conventional mores, the less popular you are likely to be." It may be simple, but not quite easy.
