Curious George: suggestions for, and mini monkey meet in, San Francisco?

I'm on vacation in Santa Clara, California right now, and I'm taking Caltrain up tomorrow (Tuesday) to see some of San Francisco (I've been twice before, but never on my own). So: 1. What should I make sure to see and do while I'm up there? I love bookstores and good cheap restaurants, and I am told that SF has both in spades. 2. Does anyone feel like meeting up with a random stranger (me) tomorrow and chilling? Because that would be ten kinds of awesome.

  • By the way, I just had my first In-N-Out in three years. That shit is crack on a bun, it's so good.
  • grilled or fresh onions?
  • Fresh, I think? I just asked for a two-by-two.
  • Double-double, even. My burger terminology is clearly off.
  • Damn, I miss In 'N' Out. Mail me some?
  • Would meet and chill, but work and then book group tomorrow get in the way. I recommend Green Apple Books, in the Richmond District, and Burma Super Star Restaurant, just down the block from the bookstore on Clement Street. I recommend, and immediately begin envying; that right there is my idea of a great 2 or 3 hours.
  • One of my favorite things is the reaction of non-West Coast foodies, who until this moment have been all "uh huh, In N Out, right, sure, love to try it, whatever", when you tell 'em the head chef at the French Laundry is a big In N Out fan.
  • Huh? I thought (for some reason) you were in Hawaii, HW - ?
  • Wait - maybe I am thinking of Mr Knicks. Oops.
  • For more SF suggestions, please see this thread. Have fun!
  • *wants a 4 x 10*
  • Hi Al.
  • HW, are you in the bay area? how come I never seen you at a meet up you luzer?? :D pmdboi, Green Apple books is very very very good, and there are a bunch of fun restaurants n bars out there, but I don't know that neighborhood well. I don't know if I can get out there tomorrow evenink. any other bay monkeys gonna try to make a meet up?
  • Wish I could come chill, but, work. Sigh. Have fun! All my suggestions in the other thread still hold. In what way is Santa Clara a vacation spot, btw? Heh, just because I live by there and Santa Clara...not so much of the interesting. Now I'm imagining you're with someone who's at EclipseCon, which would be kinda cool since my husband's there today.
  • Nope, just visiting an old friend from my undergrad school. And I get to visit my two personal Meccas, Apple and Google. (Good thing they're so close together; otherwise I'd have to carry two compasses around to figure out which direction to bow towards.) Anyway, sounds like it's going to be Green Apple FTW! Now I just have to wait for my hosts to wake up so they can take me to the Mountain View Caltrain station...
  • Medusa, even though I couldn't attend (I am indeed a luzer), I felt a part of one recent Bay Area meet-up in that I suggested the venue, the Orbit Room. Tasty mojitos, no? Which reminds me, we really should have another meet-up.
  • Hi Alnedra! And quid, what I wouldn't give to be in Hawaii. Tell my employer to say "good-bye, Mountain View, hello, Maui!"
  • So my trip went something like this: - Take Caltrain up to the stop at 4th and King; - Take a couple of buses over to Green Apple; - Lose myself in there for an hour or so, buying a couple books; - Eat Pad Thai at a Thai restaurant close by; - Take a bus back to O'Farrell and Stockton (I think?) and bum around the area with the Apple Store and the Virgin Megastore and all that for a couple hours; - Walk back to the Caltrain station. So it was pretty cool! And I spent entirely too much money. So thanks for confirming the awesomeness of Green Apple; if only my home town had a used bookstore with that good a selection.
