China state TV bans pig images in ads to avoid offending Muslims.

  • I assumed that this was a government overreaction, but hey, maybe it's justified. Bacon tastes gooood. Pork chops taste gooood. Year of the Fire Pig = BBQ goooodness.

  • I would bet that Muslims would be far more offended by breast images than Christians. Besides, it's not Christians who are offended by breast images, but a large enough majority of all citizens to be considered a public decency standard.
  • I'm not sure whether to believe this or not (though can't turn the TV on to check as I need to fix the aerial). Looking at this programme for the annual New Year's Eve TV gala, it kicks off with 'Song of the Pig'<猪之歌>, has a comic skit entitled 'New Atmosphere in the Year of the Pig' 猪年新气象, a song and dance number 肥猪天鹅湖> 'Fat Pig Swan Lake'...and more. That's THE central mass culture event of New year these days, and has been for decades, so doesn't seem like they're downplaying it that much.

  • Sorted out the TV aerial and turned the box on. I'd say there is definitely less piggery than there was monkey business last, so might well be true. See ho the horrible cheesy TV gala looks. Fireworks allowed again in downtown Beijing and it sounds like a warzone out there - the cat's most distressed poor wee fella.
