A Molly Ivins tribute
from her editor, on the occasion of her passing away due to cancer. (Links to some of her last columns on that page). She was loved by many in the US for her often humorous and irreverent political commentary and philosophy. As she says to Americans in one of her last columns: "We are the deciders."
-
Thanks, he. I was just about to post about this myself. Ivins was a truly wonderful writer and thinker. I saw her speak a few years ago at a university, and she was so funny and gracious, even to the people who attended her speech just to protest her. She will be missed.
-
Aw, dammit.
-
What Stan said. I'll never forget her takedown of Rush Limbaugh: "I have been attacked by Rush Limbaugh on the air, an experience somewhat akin to being gummed by a newt. It doesn't actually hurt, but it leaves you with slimy stuff on your ankle."
-
I hate death. It sucks, and it always happens to the wrong people.
-
My local newspaper carries her, and I generally enjoyed her columns. However, her insistence on referring to the President as "Shrub" or something similar damaged the message and power of her columns. No one who is a fan of Bush is going to take seriously any column that refers to the President as "Shrub" anymore than any fan of Clinton will take seriously any column that refers to the President as "Slick Willie."

No one who is a fan of Bush is going to take seriously any column that refers to the President as "Shrub" anymore than any fan of Clinton will take seriously any column that refers to the President as "Slick Willie." Her role was to galvanize the opposition, not convert his supporters.

God damn she was one funny awesome woman. Watch this if you don't believe me[NSFW] Big old Texas yell for one hell of a woman.

For Molly If you liked what she wrote Live the words Do something to make a difference Fight injustice I think she'd like that

Her role was to galvanize the opposition, not convert his supporters. She would have galvanized the opposition no less without namecalling, and may have been able to open a few more eyes without it. Just an opinion, of course.

From the very last line of Uncle's link: It is illegal for a prick to touch an asshole in this state. Holy. Shit.
-
I enjoyed her writing. .
-
Oh, fuck. Right when we need her, too.
