The Edge
project (Flash) of the Zoological Society of London has produced a prioritised list of endangered animals, based on how unusual and how threatened they are. You might want to browse the top 100.
I'm afraid I may have nightmares about the Malagasy Giant Jumping Rat.

I was just about to post this!! Curse you pleggers! Curse you all to hell!!!!! Excellent site though, so many weird animals we haven't even got to know yet...
-
They don't even seem to have pictures of some of these: one is represented by the skull of the only individual ever caught.
-
Well, my paleo prof always said that animals that become to specialized and have low species diversity are destined for extinction. Then he said that humanity's end was close at hand.
-
That was "too" specialized. Tu-tu specialized.
-
The Old World sucker-footed bat is my new favorite animal. Hit the road, pygmy hedgehog!
-
I'm not sure the way to garner sympathy for the cause is to say 'unless we act soon, there will be no more Giant Jumping Rats'...

Great post, Plegmund. Thanks.

This post, nay, this site is unconscionably mammal-centric. Save the nematodes!

MonkeyFilter: Unconscionably mammary-centric.

Hey. My eyes are up here.
-
ACK! I looked up, and there was a giant Long-beaked echidna with a runny nose staring at me. What's with the Salenski's shrew? It says This small shrew is known only from a single specimen. Then it looks like a box of shrew-cicles in the illustration??
-
Then he said that humanity's end was close at hand. Nice, I don't want to pay off my student loans.
-
Hm: the shrew-cicles appear in fact to be De Winton's shrews (Soriculus hypsibia), not Salenski's (Soriculus salenskii). It could be that they thought one red-toothed shrew looks much like another = true, but a bit odd because the list is supposed to prioritise things which have no close relations. In fact, there are other shrews in the top 100. Not that I'm some kind of soriculophobe, you understand.
-
Why Pleg, I had no idea you were so shrewd!
-
As we drive the evolution of species, humans may be building a future with ever more diverse pests and pathogens and without the creatures we value most.

Inside the secretive plan to gut the Endangered Species Act: Proposed regulatory changes, obtained by Salon, would destroy the "safety net for animals and plants on the brink of extinction," say environmentalists.
