Population mortality and football results "On days when the local professional football team lost at home, mortality attributable to acute myocardial infarction and stroke increased significantly in men... No increase was observed in women." Via
  • So there really is something to the idea of "winning it for the fans." Gives the phrase "football widow" new meaning.
  • It's a miracle I've lived this long considering the shower I support.
  • Well, since it's only men, and not women, this rules out my theory about doctors getting pissed and drinking, depriving the usual crowd of hospital patients the correct treatment.
  • Must be a real bitch to live in Detroit or some other perennial losing team's town.
  • Unless you're an undertaker.
  • Interestingly enough this doesn't seem to affect Australians.
  • Well, you sun-soaked, cheery over-achievers are just going to have to get with the programme and take one for the team like the rest of us. H'most interesting gomi.
  • I always thought supporting Newcastle United was bad for your health ... but this proves it (fortunately I don't support Newcastle United!)
  • When Colombia beat Argentina 5-0 for the World Cup classifying rounds, there were 60 people killed in Colombia during the celebrations. Does that count?
  • Impressive death toll, Camilo, but as it came in victory rather than delete I fear we must exclude it for the purposes of our survey.

  • Delete! Oh, painful delete!
  • I, as a former high school football player and occasional football (American football) viewer, think that American men are batshit insane for the degree to which they care about the outcome of a game played by a group of millionaires that they will never meet.
  • Bad news for Notts County fans.
  • That survey was posted up on a Crewe message board bob, noting that we are listed seventh crappest supporter experience. I had to agree with the bloke there who says the whole premise of the ranking is symptomatic of a crap gloryhunting mentality, though it also elicited the classic "Its the highest we'll finish in a league table this year so embrace it I say!" :D.
  • "Its the highest we'll finish in a league table this year so embrace it I say!" Priceless. Having spent most of my life following Arsenal on the one hand, and Cambridge Utd on the other (like my old English teacher, Nick Hornby), I think the distress of the latter (non-league teams don't show up on that survey, thus saving me from realising just how depressing Cambridge's position really is) balances out the good times of the former. Since you're a Crewe supporter, I won't mention that the past season or two haven't really felt like good times with the Arse.
