What does a food stylist do? What are the career prospects? How hard is it to replicate what they do at home?

What are some of the secrets or methods used? Hopefully, this is a fun look into an unusual career path.

  • That was fun (especially the 'let's try this at home' article) and enlightening - a whole different branch of the culinary art. I avoid any issues of this nature by producing the same brown gloop whatever ingredients I started with or dish I was attempting.
  • Yeah fun stuff. I often try to take pics of food and dishes - but it is really hard to get things to look as tasty as they do in cookbooks. I think that the "replicate" link failed a little in the lighting, angle and photoshopping phase though.
  • MonkeyFilter: the days of using motor oil in place of pancake syrup are over Probably for the best, really. Nifty stuff, thanks meredithea!
  • I would be willing to bet that the photos of attempts done at home would look more like the actual recipe photos if they had used some professional photo equipment. It's amazing how you can make a piece of crap look golden with the proper camera, lighting and background.
  • Nice FPP!
  • Oops, and I did fail to mention, "thanks for posting!"
  • don't forget the cardboard, candle wax, soft-focus lens and what-the-hell-some-vaseline for good measure. Mmmmmm. Here's the best food stylist's website.
  • Vaseline is always necessary on a porn shoot. Err...food porn, that is.
