Victor Jara
The death of Augusto Pinochet set me thinking of one of his many victims, singer Victor Jara. Here's some mp3 rarities and pictures of a man whose torture and murder encapsulate the brutality of Pinochet's regime.

Thanks A_C.

What roryk said.

For a job I had I had to interview Chilean victims of torture. Yesterday I had a bottle of Champagne; a promise I made to myself after the interviews. However, I feel for these people, who never saw justice being made. Death is too good for Pinochet.

Great links Beauchard. Never thought to search Youtube - that's the first time I've seen footage of Victor.

The song "Matador" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (an Argentinian band) is about Victor Jara; I got the point of the song but I didn't know who he was, specifically. I was interested in finding out more - thanks for these links, Abiezer.

Thanks for that, Abiezer, the mp3s especially. Thatcher once thanked Pinochet for "bringing democracy" to Chile. Even in her warped world, that's stretching it a bit.

Thank you so much, Abiezer & Beauchard. Don't click this, bobboggis.

Didn't know about Jara at all, so thanks for this Abiezer.

Yeah, I saw that, lll. She's been out of power for fifteen years, but the visceral disgust that woman can still provoke in me is astonishing. /derail

Death is too good for Pinochet. Sadly, not even what he deserved, a long, pain-filled agony remebering and *understanding* the pain he made countless suffer would have helped ease the pain of those long gone, the pain of those who survived with the scars and the memories. He got away. And now he's gonna have a funeral with military honors. Rot in hell, bastard.

Mel - I first heard about Jara through a song too - a version by Dick Gaughan of the one whose lyrics are at the third link. The mp3 link site lists some other artists in the Nueva Cancion movement he was part of - the only other of the four I know is Inti-Illimani.

Apparently, the family wants cremation to avoid having his tomb defaced, and becoming a site of protest. Don't worry, old man, they'll find you.

Almost makes one want to believe in heaven and especially hell.

Nice FPP.

The beeb has an interesting piece by Chileans both pro and con. An excellent account of Pinochet's brutality is After the First Death by Lake Saragis.

Pinochet photo essay. Worth a look.
