Meet Thumbelina, the world's smallest horse
  • I want!!
  • Me too! [Stomach growls]
  • *winces* So sadly deformed, this poor animal can do nothing but rack up vet's bills for its owner. But she is indisputably small.
  • I have no problem with Thumbelina, who is cute in a freakish way, but regarding farms that intentionally breed "toy" version of real animals, I'm with bees... :(
  • Awww. Now I'm squeed and angry.
  • It's like a horse d'ouvres...
  • AHH! GIANT HORSE! *runs and hides*
  • poor little freak
  • The horse itself is probably quite happy. It will never endure the sufferings heaped upon racehorses & the like.
  • I don't like that horse. Well, maybe I'd like the horse if I met it, but from this vantage, I don't like that horse.
  • The little 'uns are often really mean, actually. :D
  • The little 'uns are often really mean, actually Shetlands are certainly stubborn bad-tempered little bastards.
  • What a cute horsie. But yeah, the background about its' birth and future is bleak.
  • I'm just glad to see the owners aren't planning to attempt this again. A couple of paragraphs in, I was assuming the breeders would be rushing to turn this into a new fad.
  • They will breed more miniatures.. which in itself isn't necessarily cruel or anything. This one happens to have dwarfism on top of being teeny tiny. it would make a good warhorse for my Action Man™
  • Miniature horses do tend to be terribly sickly and short-lived. But what a cute horsie! :D She's like the same size as my dog (also a Shetland... Sheepdog), but weighs more.
  • Is little horse good to eat?
  • No. If they breed miniature whales, we'll tell them to call you. awww! Tiiiiny mutant horsie! Good thing they're not planning to breed any more, but this one gets a carrot from me.
  • I never could see the attraction of mini-bikes, but after seeing this, now I totally do.
  • She is adorable. So, what do they do, keep track of when she's in season and keep her corralled away from the boy horsies? Or do they spay them like dogs?
  • Best it be a baby carrot - that wee horse's intestines can't accommodate a regular-sized one.
  • I hope they keep her corralled away from the stallions when she is in season. She couldn't handle one - he's hung like a horse.
  • In the article says she avoids the company of other horses and prefers sleeping the dog kennel. And for a mare this is an unusual and even abnormal behaviour.
  • If it's like most horse farms, their stallion will be mostly kept by himself unless they specifically want to breed a mare. Studs can get mean with other male horses as well as randy with females. yes, definitely a baby carrot. Or maybe a small piece of apple.
  • But really big hugs! Big hugs! :D
  • "If they breed miniature whales, we'll tell them to call you." Oh, man, that was awesome!
