Hutong photography Scenes from Beijing's fast disappearing traditional lanes and alleys.
  • Great FPP!
  • The FPP of the century!
  • Meh, I liked this FPP better before it sold out.
  • Note to self: never tell people on mofirc that you've posted to the front page.
  • Terrific comment, Abiezer!
  • One of my neighbours on the redevelopment of our neighbourhood
  • Champagne link!
  • YOU WIN 30 DOLLARS!!!
  • That will be $31.50 with tax.
  • Wouldn't that be 28.50 with tax? I mean, winnings get taxed... right? I'll see myself out.
  • What about the lovely photos, smartarses! sulks
  • What lovely photos Abiezer!
  • The government really doesn't understand their tourist market if they are tearing down old buildings. No one wants to go see shiny modern China - they can get shiny modern at home. Tourists want uniquely Beijing - preferrably old Beijing.
  • the lovely photos are quite lovely. the opendemocracy link didn't work for me.
  • Still works here after clearing my chache rory. is it cos it's a jsp file? I think you have the nail on the head there jb. If only the city authorities would realise before it's too late. You do hear some noises - Wen Jiabao has spoken on the issue and all the bigwigs live in old courtyards themselves - but time is running out,
  • Some of these places certainly seem to be, if not terminal, in a pretty bad state of decay. They are certainly some interesting pictures and I've never mofirced.
  • Time is running out on the past? Excellent post11!!!
  • Personally, I'd go to China just to experience something weird. Freaky culture, all sorts of stuff you don't understand and so on. Doesn't really matter if the buildings are shiny (although some not-so-shiny ones would be cool) as long as the people and the food is the same. Still, excellent post.
  • gorgeous Abiezer, I particularly like the pics with snow. really makes me want to go to china even more so....must win lottery!
  • Maybe you don't need a lottery, Medusa. My friend flies to Taiwan semi-regularly to visit her family on a graduate student's budget. I'm not saying flying to Asia would be cheap (it sure streches her), but I don't think it's outside of someone fully employed might be able to afford, if they saved for it. Abiezer would be better able to say what the costs are. I think North Americans (and I include myself) often think travelling to other continents is more expensive that it is. A trip for a family from Toronto to Florida is not much cheaper than going to Europe (esp if you fly, or spend any time expensive places like Disneyworld) -- but many more Canadians would visit Florida before going to Europe. Flying from Toronto to Vancouver is only 1/3 less than flying to London (which I've done for $400 USD from New York, and $700 CND from Toronto), and that's London UK (not London, Ontario. That would be a very silly flight from Toronto.)
  • (not London, Ontario. That would be a very silly flight from Toronto.) Or just a silly trip altogether.
