Suburban Nightmare
Long Island set the tone for the nightmare that suburbia was to become.
Artists have used the nightmare for inspiration.

Well, except for the fact that Long Island comprises some 1,400 square miles, and is home to some 7.6 million people (2.8 million if you count just Nassau and Suffolk Counties). Seems pretty likely you'd find a whole host of unsavory stuff going on in any sample area of that size, whether it's urban, suburban, or rural. Aesthetically, many suburbs certainly leave something to be desired, but I think the generic "suburbs are evil" meme is way simplistic. (Consider the final link in the FPP, featuring "shades of David Lynch" artwork; per Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, "Lynchian" is an adjective equally as applicable to urban and rural areas as suburban.)
