The Pigeon Fanciers of Damascus

More here. Also: the pigeon wars of Beirut, and the ol' Israeli Pigeon-powered Internet. Issues discussed: weapons of mass destruction - pigeon fanciers' competence to give evidence in Syrian courts - Kash Hamam, the pigeon wars - how much a pair of Jews cost in Beruit in 2003 - why Wi-Fly beats Wi Fi.

  • Pigeon selling as environmental metaphor.
  • Fantastic links Misterrrrrr . . Quidnunc? Kid? Is it? Yes, yes, well once again you've pandered to the pondering pontificators proudly. Well done, I say. *forwards links, inserts own name for quidnunc's*
  • YES! I used to love to watch the pigeons being flown in the evenings when we were in Turkey. The owners would wave a rag on a pole, and the birds would wheel and turn with the sunset gold and silver on their wings. I'm sure I mentioned that we were invited to a house to watch them being flown, and the man's prize pigeons were decorated with small bells and beads pierced through the skin of their necks and 'bracelets' attached to their legs. It was wonderful! I didn't have my camera, and I've always regreted not getting a picture. Can anyone out there find one? The place was Incirlik village, outside of Adana, but I'm sure there would be more places in the Middle East that would have this custom.
  • coo! what nice links!
  • Loved these Quid, and thought of all the pigeon lofts on a thousand allotments back home - here in Beijing they tie small hollow tubes to pigeons tails, with give off a low whistle as they fly across the rooftops. Very nice heard and viewed from a bar terrace of a summer's evening.
  • Excellent post. There are small flocks of doves or pigeons that sometimes fly by my window here at work (10 th floor). And a few times I've seen what looks like a falcon or maybe a small eagle, chasing them. First time I mentioned this co-workers though I was crazy but it has been witnesssed by others lately. Been trying to catch a picture, but no luck so far. Fast critters!
  • Also, how google really works.
  • Heavens to Mergytroid, it's a sick, terrible site even! Nick, take a lap! Jerks.
  • Sorry guys, I would have put a more explicit warning (beware of grisly pigeon corpse), but I was too busy being gay.
  • Y'know it really is a fine FPP. You don't have to be a gay jerk to appreciate it. Them. You don't have to be a gay jerk to appreciate them. I think the Wi-Fly has promise, even. Wireless itself has some challenges once you get past the "bedroom connected to the living room" part.
  • Wi-Fly would be fine as long as someone cleans up the "dropped packets".
  • As soon as men can fly (well, American men anyway and poop on the cars of these people..only then can we be compared to the pigeons.
  • Abie: How great! I'd love to see/hear that on a summer evening. I did find this page that has sound files of flute carrying pigeons. Very erie sound. It's a bit slow loading, but if you hit the English version bar, it will take you right down to where you want to be--unless your German is better than mine. There's also a pic of pigeon bells. This has some info on the pigeon wars and mentions pigeon jewelery, but no pics. Haiku Yosa Buson The behavior of the pigeon is beyond reproach, but the mountain cuckoo?
  • UH, we are talking about rats with wings here, aren't we?
  • Yup, one man's rats with rings is another's hobby. Now ducks and geese in a public park--THAT'S DISGUSTING!
  • Awesome link! )) Loved learning about this interesting subculture.
