Regulator Of The Internet--knows nothing about the Internets.
[YouTube Link] Jon, Stewart exposing that Senator Ted Stevens The legislator of Net Neutrality, knows absolutely nothing[The actual speech, quicktime required] about the internet. At all. The internet might be in for serious trouble. Here is an article explaining more about the issue, from PC Magazine.
-
I fear for the fiture of the intenet, as America definitely sets the pace for most of the internet. As described by a friend: "If say, Comcast (or whatever 1st tier provider operates Comcast) is allowed to charge a premium for information going over its own network, you have an issue. It means other ISPs, say from Canada, will have to also pay to peer Comcasts network Canadian ISPs are going to want to in-turn also charge a premium to customers so they can continue to peer Comcast as well as earn money like Comcast is now able to do Oversimplified example, but even then, yea -- a huge portion of the Internet exists within the US. I believe the US also owns and regulates Domain Name Registration." This problem may have global effects, and destroy one of the last avenues of free speech in America.

Here is another article explaining Ted Steven's Net Neutrality bill. A bit biased though.

DJ Ted Stevens Techno Remix: "A Series of Tubes"
-
Ted Stevens opposes net neutrality, and is not the legislator of it. The wording makes it a bit ambiguous. Also, Canadian ISP's already do this crap (or so I've been told). Some like Rogers or Shaw have their own VOIP programs and will charge you if you use someone else's (again, or so I've heard). And at least one Canadian ISP has blocked the website of a union that is striking against it. More dastardly is that the telecom companies are trying to spin it like Google magically has some way of getting their internet access for free. Of course, the reality of it is they are paying just like everyone else -- I would bet that their internet bandwith bill is easily their biggest expense! And, as has become common with political campains, they are also astroturfing with their own websites that appear to be set up by real concerned citizens. such as http://handsoff.org/ and have even made little cartoons with crappy animation (flash video with smug sound) to give the impression that they are real low budget groups -- and imply that google, yahoo, and microsoft have these magic free internet connections. As always, Ask A Ninja explains it best.

OH WOW I HADN'T HEARD THIS

he needs to have his tubes tied.

How in the tubular neutrality did any of these stupid people get into a position of power?
-
It's not what you know but etc. etc. etc.

As a counterpoint: How 'Saving The Net' may kill it Granted, the piece is written by professional contrarian Andrew Orlowski, but the guy he's interviewing makes some good points. Some not so good ones too, but definitely a few good ones about how the internets were set up and how different protocols work and traffic management and complicated stuff like that.

I wonder what is behind this? I mean, how would AT&T benefit monetarily from this spying? They wouldn't do it if it wasn't in their financial interest, so what's the real reason?

U.N. summit's meltdown ignites new Internet Cold War. New geopolitical rift isn't east-west or north-south: it roughly tracks commitment to free expression. The U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, and their allies are now facing off against the likes of China, Russia, Libya, Nigeria, and dozens of other nations.
-
Frankly, I wouldn't say the US side is as dedicated to "free expression" as it is "commercial expression".
