Syd Barrett Dead. So long Syd.
  • . i've got a bike, you can ride it if you like....
  • Shine on, you crazy diamond
  • Uh... How can you have any meat, if you don't eat your pudding? (Was that one of his? I forget.)
  • It is most certainly not one of his. That's from The Wall, way after the group split with him. Man, this news certainly craps on my parade.
  • No that was a Roger Waters. I like the post-Barret stuff (specificalyy Meddel thru Animals) but the band never would have formed with out him. Like Abie said, Shine on you crazy diamond.
  • I liked the early Barrett/Floyd stuff, and have a couple of CDs of Syd's solo work (Barrett and Opel). Granted, his music wasn't suited to popular radio airplay, but it was good. Rest in peace, Syd.
  • Man, this news certainly craps on my parade. Look, it was a simple mistake, one that lots of people make! Don't let my ignorance get you down!
  • I don't know that I've ever heard the album Barrett contributed to, but now I'll have to find a copy.
  • Piper At the Gates of Dawn. Original and classic.
  • Piper At The Gates of Dawn. Awesome. I'm going to pop it on the CD player now for Syd :(
  • Never listened to the band beyond what was required in high school English. But can't deny the impact they had.
  • Genius sometimes dances on the edge of madness. And sometimes over the edge... Will never forget the first time I heard "Jugband Blues." I can hear it now... it still sounds like a dream, and it still sounds fresh. What an amazing thing to live in an era of recording where something as ephemeral and alive as music can outlast its creator. Haunting music, haunted human. Sure hope he has found something like peace now. Sure hope we all do someday.
  • Thanks Syd. Hope the afterlife makes more sense for you than this place did.
  • Lime and limpid green a second scene A fight between the blue you once knew Floating down the sound resounds around the icy waters undergroud Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania Neptune, Titan, stars can frighten Nenenenenenewwww neneneneneewwww .
  • This totally sucks. I really hope there's some "lost" recordings floating around his mother's house that will be issued. If there are any Seattle monkeys reading this, there's a Syd Barrett tribute at 7pm tonight at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard, with movies and music, hosted by John Randolph.
  • Bye Syd.
  • As I read this, the usually-conservative-but currently-not NatRad is quietly playing Syd Stuff in the background. Nice. For someone who only did one album with The Floyd then dribbled off into the darkness of his own mania, he's extraordinarly loved and remembered.
  • thanks syd. this makes me cry.
  • Syd, shine on. .
  • . I only like Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Meddle. Not a PF fan at all otherwise. Especially not the band that did a PF branded Volkwagen Golf in Germany. "Change returns success..."
  • .
  • Meddle is fucking great. Plus it includes a great clip of the Anfield All Male Choir. Walk On! etczzzzzzzz Warning - too much pot can have a lasting effect kids

  • Syd is dead, shine on you crazy diamond. Remember when you were young You shone like the sun. And now the sun has faded, from High Hopes to Postwar Dreams but can you still sing, At The Gates Of Dawn… where the sun rises forevermore? What Money was before the fame, burned out Pink, burned him out—and now he is Comfortably Numb. Oh why, when you were still Learning to Fly, but with a Momentary Laspe Of Reason, met your destiny? You reigned, triumphed, influenced, uncaged the Dogs Of War, lunatics laughing on the grass. Wish You Were Here. Oh, does the band still play, through the memories of one passed away? In this age, where artists have no name but their music? Where do we retreat, for all the frightening stars, when the cat goes prowling, bald and shaken awry, and bicycles out in the streets, and anything you want. Come on, you raver, you seer of visions, come on, you painter, you prisoner. What paths again shall tread ye, Sunset, Sunrise! I'm Alive, Flaming— But reaching for the truth too soon Jupiter, Saturn, Oberon, Miranda, And Titania, Neptune, Titan, outshined by a single diamond. Dedicated to the memory and influence of Syd Barrett.
  • "It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear That I'm not here."
