FontEditor BitFontMaker
- does this work?
-
I don't know if it works, I don't even know what it is?! Please explain!
-
It works in that you can use it to very crudely edit bitmap fonts and then download it as a .ttf file when you're done. But those are of limited use anyway, as bitmapped fonts don't scale and look like rubbish when printed so really it would only be interesting if you were making something to use as a display on a website... and even then I find the "micro-sized 8 pixel bitmap font" thing has been way overdone and cliche at this point, not to mention nearly impossible to read. Stick with real fonts.

what rhomboid said. if you want to make some fonts, try to track down a copy of fontographer.
-
There is at least one torrent for fontographer...
-
for something simpler, you can find a copy of Data Becker's "My Handwriting II" on eBay or somewhere. you can import .ttf files and edit them, or import scanned lettering and create fonts out of it. I found a copy for $6 at my local used-bookstore, and wish I had bought every copy on the shelf.

I disagree, respectfully, with Roryk and Rhomboid. This is awfully cool. No, it isn't Fontographer, but it's relative lack of Fontographerness is sort of irrelevant to what it IS, yes? Did you play with it? I went through and looked at a ton of the fonts that were made with this thing and there are some GREAT ones - really really nice. Has there been misuse of tiny bitmapped fonts? Probably, but that does not make them utterly worthless. For every bad design you show me using bitmapped fonts I can show one just as bad that uses 'real' fonts. My goodness.

> Did you play with it? yes, and i like it and i agree that it's very cool. but if you want fonts that will work properly, this isn't the tool to use.
