The New Shadow:
Tolkien's quickly abandoned sequel to Lord of the Rings.
Also, the original version of "Riddles in the Dark" (where Gollum willingly surrenders his magic ring, aka "the lie that Bilbo told",) and the quest for the Lonely Mountain from Gandalf's point of view.

What not " The Phantom Menace " ?

He was right. No point in doing it. Not if you constrain yourself to just the world of men. Tolkien was adamant that Middle-Earth was a prehistoric Europe, LotR taking place about 6,000 years BC, which presumably prevented him from bringing back Gandalf & Co. from the Elven Lands to fight off some new foe.

Been years since I read Unfinished Tales -- you've inspired me to dig it out again. Excellent links, Nick, many )))!!!

'Tis indeed a cool find! Truly the best of teh Internetses.

Has anyone read The Children of Hurin yet?

Dear Christopher Tolkein: You had damn well better not be another Brian Herbert. Or I will summon the ghost of C.S. Lewis to haunt the ever-living fuck out of you. Regards, mct

Has anyone read The Children of Hurin yet? Not the newly published version, but I've read the fragments that are in Unfinished Tales. There we get more detail than in the sparer Silmarillion version, deeper characterisation, more dialogue, more about life in Doriath, and even some lighter moments to alleviate the general feeling of DOOOOOOOM. I'll be interested to see the expanded version, though I'll admit this isn't my favourite of the First Age takes. I'd much rather see a finished version of Of Tuor And His Coming To Gondolin, for example-- that was the highlight of Unfinished Tales for me. (Part of it online here)

Darpa Launches Secret 'Gandalf' Project
-
Darpa, the Pentagon's far-out research wing, is launching a new, classified effort to find enemies by the phone they use. It's called Gandalf. Evidently DARPA doesn't go to the movies much. Such a project should be called Batman.

I wonder why "Gandalf"? Why not Palantíri, for instance?
-
I wonder why "Gandalf"? Why not Palantíri, for instance? I assume it's because the managers had to sign off on the name. They had heard of "Gandalf," but were kind of disturbed when their subordinates went on about a palantir, especially when said subordinate mentioned they should know about the palantir because it was in the movie, etc. Actually, it would be interesting to know what the formal process is for naming such things at DARPA.
-
"Sauron" seems more apt than "Gandalf," but I guess they wanted to ownplay-day the evil-ay.
-
It's called that because it's going to crash and burn in a creepy underground complex under some remote mountain.
-
I thought it was called that because it is tall while everyone around it is short.
