Ladies' Night or Set-up? A bar in Maryland decided to open its doors only to women between 9-11PM this past Saturday night, while offering 1ยข beers, funnels and other cheap drunkenness-enablers. Then at 11, the men were let in. Was it a chance for women to bond, man-free? Or was it throwing chum to the sharks?
  • Genius. Pure genius.
  • If I was a woman I'd be pretty insulted at being infantalized by these concerned onlookers.
  • if i were a woman, i would sit down to pee
  • To me, the issue seems to be not that men were admitted at 11, but whether it was known that the switch would take place. If the women knew it was going to be a meat market at 11, I don't see what the big deal is since no one's forcing them to stay there.
  • [and they could have cut out of there at 10:45]
  • Well, it sure beats this approach.
  • And at 11:30, the Girls Gone Wild producers show up!
  • Someone is complaining about cheap beer? I just don't get it.
  • At least they don't let the CHUDs in.
  • I started a Chicago Open Bar Project (myspace warning) for free/cheap ass booze. Through this, I've found that being a cheap-ass alcoholic isn't gender specific. So...I dunno about this one. Yes, there are scummy dudes that are out to get a chick plastered. But at the same time, there's actually girls that umm....wanna get drunk and go home with someone. I know! I know! Not really my moral cup of tea either, but it happens.
  • A symbiotic relationship! Perfect; however, this raises the possible incidents of cross-dressing by budget conscious males.
  • Oh God... (no offense to you queso) but this is SO STUPID! Do we actually believe that women are so pliable and prone to looseness with liquor that a mere one cent night will turn a prude into a "whore?!" Umm... I have to call bullshit. Certain types of people drink too much and do stupid things, the rest, well... whether or not what they drink costs one penny or $15, they stop when THEY are "done" YES, one may drink more when involved in a 9 to 11 freebie, but, your behavior as an adult is still reflective of who you really are. If you're too drunk... ummm gee whiz... go home! That said, they have a similar deal for men.. it's called happy hour... It's one thing if someone slips another a "roofie" or another harder type of drug, but if you, as a woman, want to "get loose" due to a mere offering of cheap liquor and get your sh*t on, it's not due to the booze... you wanted sex just as much as the guy next to you. wake up. your p*ssy is not sanctified, it's just damn p*ssy. Seen it before, will see it again. whatever...
  • Mmm, well, debaser, if I remember my youth correctly, I could come up with scenarios where I would have taken chances when under the influence which I wouldn't have when sober. If this was a bar for 30 year-olds, I might agree with you, but it seems directed at college kids. And the set-up by el queso gives me a mental picture of ravening hordes of horny college guys swooping in at 11 to clean up any drunk-girl-litter that didn't leave at 10:45. Perhaps today's kids are so much wiser than I was at that age that that wouldn't happen. The men who came in at 11 would have a snifter of brandy, talk about the latest Lacross results, exchange phone numbers with the remaining coeds, and go back to the dorm to have a cup of tea before going to sleep. On the other hand, the reports about the prevalence of binge drinking in younguns today makes me wonder whether this isn't just a way by the bar to capitilize on that trend. Maybe they should let the experiment run for a few months, just to prove that women really want it, but just don't want to admit it when sober. Sanctified pussy, my ass!
  • I would not want to see the inside of the ladies powder room at 10:55pm at this place.....
  • Path: The drinking takes place from both parties... yes... males have the negative stereotype of being the "predator" but drinking is going on by the willingness of both groups. These women are by all means legal and even more than that (meaning 21). They are responsible for any and all actions they take, up to and including drinking too much and getting their groove on with an ugly or "random" guy. God knows, I've heard and laughed with (and to) guys who've ended up with the "ugly" chick due to drunkeness... what's good for the gander is good for the goose too... Once again, I reiterate, if you are in a mind altering state due to something you were given unknowingly, that IS date rape at the least. However, if you willingly de-inhibit yourself, you have to "literally" sleep in the bed you made... whether you're male or female... What I'm trying to say is, that at the end of the day, YOU alone are responsible for the situations you end up in (barring the obvious assault, etc. instances)
  • (btw... it's not that I don't see your point... because you do have one (i.e. the demographic this place is tartgeting)... It's just that I think it's slightly insulting to think that women are too weak to dare to enter into a bar during ladies' night as they are bound to be taken advantage of) Just playing Devil's Advocate...
  • I don't think anyone's callin' date rape here. But plenty of young folks go into these situations thinking they can handle themselves when in fact they can't.
  • Armaghetto, regarding your Chicago Open Bar Project, your site says: "There are roughly 750,000 bars in Chicago. Even if only one tenth of one percent of them have an open bar, that means there's still 75,000 places to drink for free on any given night." I think maybe you should stay away from the open bar when calculating your percentage conversions...
  • But, debaser - the point seems to be to get the women drunk first. Maybe the guys are blasted, as well, but it's not due to the penny bears offered by the bar. Many women would have a couple of beers and leave, but the binge drinking thing makes me think that there are some, maybe a lot, who would falter. The thing that really disturbs me, though, is the implicit suggestion that drunk women are fair game. If they had closed the bar at 11, I'd think it was sort of ok (except for the possibility that any of the women might try to drive home.) It's the "let's let the men in to take advantage of the situation" thinking that I find sad. I keep trying to come up with a similar situation for a guy which would place him in a bad situation, but I think that men and women find different things threatening in a situation like this.
  • A friend of mine owned a nightclub in Vancouver - this was twenty-odd years ago. Once a week he held a ladies night, featuring cheap drinks, no cover charge and male strippers for ladies only until 10 pm. The whole thing was a pretty effective marketing gimmick. By 10 pm there was always a lineup of slavering guys outside willing to pay the cover charge and full-on drink prices for access to the supposedly already well-lubricated and lust-crazed women inside. Turned out to be a good money maker on what would otherwise be a quiet night. By virtue of my association with the owner I had access to the place during the ladies only portion of the evening and I was struck more by the gleeful and raunchy reaction of the women to the strippers than I was by the amount of cheap booze they were drinking. The women seemed to be much more aware of the game being played than the guys were and conducted themselves accordingly. Most girls ain't as dumb as some guys would have them and most are capable of taking care of themselves (or each other, as they always seemed to arrive and leave in packs). But this was twenty years ago, perhaps times have changed.
  • Do we actually believe that women are so pliable and prone to looseness with liquor that a mere one cent night will turn a prude into a "whore?!" Yes.
  • Chy - which women?
  • well there are some obvious answers to THAT question paht *hic* but this isnt the self-link thread so I'll absent myself.... seriously tho, both path & debaser represent important components of this issue. yes, women who are old enough to go into bars should be old enough to make appropriate decisions/take responsibility etc., and to pre-emptively get all protective and avuncular is somewhat sexist. on the other hand, yes, these ploys are somewhat creepy, but I think they are ultimately fueled by the desire to MAKE MORE MONEY (a wholesome murrikan value) as opposed to setting up young thangs to be molestimated (a not very nice thing, indeed) so relax! its all ok.... now, where did I leave that wine bottle...
  • So, Medusa, what's yer sign?
  • "Chy - which women?" Inhibited whores.
  • Oh, no wonder, it's University of Maryland at College Park, the goofiest place in all Maryland. Nobody who really wants an education goes there, it's for cheerleaders and fratboys. Serious kids go to Towson; bright kids go to Swarthmore.
  • You know I can think of, like, 4 or 5 bars here in Calgary that have a "ladies night" based on the exact same principle. Male strippers and cheap drinks for ladies until 10:30 and then a free-for-all after that. Did you guys just fly in from Prudesville? Don't be a square, daddy-o. MonkeyFilter: Your p*ssy is not sanctified.
  • islander you bring to mind the GREAT line from Gilda: "If I were a ranch, they'd call me the Bar Nothing" zing!! Rita Hayworth is so my idol :D
  • *Testifies*
  • Is it recommended by four out of five dentists?
  • I've never seen that movie!
  • islander, I highly recommmend, its a great one!
  • Medusa I no know who this Mr Quim is but he has one whack ass site!!! Wha da hell language be they speakin?
  • Berek, the site would appear to be in portugese, which I don't speak, altho I am known to sing along to brazilian music...so I really don't know what they're saying, but I understand the cat well enough ;)
