Roller Derby.

As a mild-mannered Brit more used to cricket on the lawn, the discovery that this is what the Yanks get up to has been quite a revalation. And what's not to like? Teams like the Gotham Girls, Rat City Rollergirls and the Boston Derby Dames, made up of, quite frankly some of the grooviest and scariest chicks ever like Janet Meano, Honey St Claire and Lucy Furr make this my new sport of choice. Despite a couple of articles in the British press a while ago, it doesn't seem to be catching on over here. Bummer. I have more or les arbitrarily decided to follow the Philly Rollergirls. Any US monkeys into this? And yes, I probably am only interested in this because of the hot chicks.

  • I was thinking about going to one of the Philly Rollergirls games. I'll report back if I do end up attending.
  • And yeah, my primary interest in the sport is oogling crazy, punk rock chicks.
  • Gawd Bless em!
  • I used to watch women's roller derby on TV when I was a kid, decades ago. The San Francisco Bay Bombers were my fave. I guess perverts start young.
  • I get this.
  • no love for the Lonestar Rollergirls?
  • This has been around for a long time. My dad has stories of going to Roller Derby matches during the '50's. ...and of skipping college classes to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle. Maybe Dad was cooler than I realised...
  • Yeah, those Texas chics are winning all over the show. As a Brit, I have to go for the underdog. GO PHILLY!!!!
  • My boyfriend and his friends have gone to see the Rat City Rollergirls here and loved it. I think, like Alex Ander, the main impetus is to ogle crazy punk rock chicks.
  • Nowt wrong with that.
  • Here's a big old debate about the roller derby.
  • They use terms like inane and porn on wheels like they're a bad thing... I can kind of see where that person is coming from, but on the other hand, don't we all to some extent conform to gender stereotypes, and the 'roller derby chick' seems to be a pretty cool one to sign up for. Sheesh! I just thought it looked like fun, and now I'm enforcing the patriarchal hegemony again! Guess I should have done gender studies instead of art. However, I am still so doing a painting based on those women one day! GO PHILLY!
  • Hey, I said it was interesting. I've never been to one, so I don't have much so say. It seemed like both sides made strong arguments. I'm more of a roller disco girl than a roller derby girl. A lover, not a fighter.
  • I know, dude - I wasn't having a go at you, just the intellectualisation of what to me just looked like a top laugh. Take me rolerskating, you mad, impetuous fool!
  • Oh yeah... GO PHILLY!
  • MonkeyFilter: They use terms like inane and porn on wheels like they're a bad thing... **really, really, really wants a disco skirt and a set of wheels Go Granny!
  • Image hosting by Photobucket the bosses from both my jobs on the right, and another lady i work with on the left. they're on an atlanta roller derby team called the TOXIC SHOCKS, which gratifies me spiritually in ways i can't really articulate. everyone should attend at least one roller derby bout in their life, making sure to go early to tailgate in the parking lot with ridiculous amounts of booze.
  • These are the women I am not meeting enough of.
  • grrr!
