"The Pollard Willow"
-
Perhaps they do it just for the challenge but I've always wondered why anyone would steal well-known works of art. Aside from the a few wealthy unscrupulous collectors there can't be much of a market for them.
-
Huge market for them. There are many wealthy people out there who would pay for a classic artwork to have only for themselves. These crooks aren't stealing these artworks in a vacuum - there's a demand.
-
*wants it just for me*
-
*is also a pig*
-
Good news! Now where's The Scream? *sniff* I didn't realize the Munch painting stolen was one of four. I feel a little better. They're still jackasses, though.
-
then it was really not stolen, was it? merely borrowed.
-
I used to work in a small art museum. It seemed like the patrons were always in a state of outgare at the minimal security measures we took (no large bags allowed in galleries, guards circulating the floor, railings around sculptures, etc.) If they only knew the astronomical insurance premiums we were paying!
-
"Outgare" should be "outrage." "Outgare" is when people try to outdo each other in dressing garishly. Damn arthritis.
-
Yeah, if I has millions in disposable income I'd order an illegal Van Gogh. Not this one, though.
-
wow!! awesome. I have never seen that painting before (I mean, a print or repro or image thereof) its really gorgeous. I'm very glad its been recovered without damage.
-
So van Gogh as to be almost parodic -- but gorgeous seems indeed the aptest word. I do admire the way he has those trees march in at a diagonal. And the sky! The sun! The grasses! *overdoses* *passes out* *yea, far, far out*
-
"Yeah, if I has millions in disposable income I'd order an illegal Van Gogh. Not this one, though." Oh, idunno. I think I'd take it. Brighten up the living room. And the pruned trees really appeal to me -- but that could be a Dutch thing. Or maybe it's just the rarity of a Dutch landscape with sunshine in it...
-
Edvard Munch: Beyond The Scream is a really good article on the painter behind the one-everyone-knows, and roughly 2,000 others. This Van Gogh is beautiful, absolutely. I love the riot between the dark yellows and blue.

The trees look like deer, or some other horned animal poised to spring.
