"No One Anticipated the Breech of the Levees" WASHINGTON (AP) -- In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage.

Bush didn't ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: "We are fully prepared." Video Goodness Here

  • Much more of the videos can be seen here.
  • ..no one beleived me when I said it was the federal government's fault.
  • -wails for impeachment again-
  • Yes, the feds screwed up. Yes, local government screwed up. Yes, Bush should be impeached. But technically it was "could top the levies" not "could breach the levies." And if we focus on this as the big lie, as opposed to breaking the law as with FISA, or lying to the public about connections between Iraq and 9-11, or Iraq and yellow cake, or Iraq and WMDs, nothing will happen as usual. We have enough to hang him. Its just that as mad as people are, nobody can get their senators/congressman to listen. Maybe we should stop buying oil. That would get their attention. Who's for biking to work?
  • History will not vindicate this adminstration. Bush may almost singlehandedly replace Nixon as the most ethically vacant President, Harding's as the most generally corrupt administration, Tyler as the most useless and ineffective President, and Buchanan's as the President with a near-total lack of vision and imagination in anticipating the bad outcomes of his policies.
  • Who does he beat for incompetence? This man should not be holding the office.
  • As far as incompetence and simply being way beyond his depth, I'd say Bush is worse than Tyler. But then, Tyler's own party kicked him out once they saw what kind of President he was shaping up to be.
  • Like Zorro!
  • Though it is hard to say which is worse: when Bush was told about the attacks on 9/11, he sat there looking like an idiot, blinking; when Buchanan was told that a bunch of southern states had seceded, he just sat there blinking for over two months until he was out of office and it was no longer his problem anymore.
  • Fucking cunts.
  • chimaera: and the Veep is bad shot.
  • The fact that this is even somehow open to 'debate' shows exactly how teflon BushCo is. There is no point in having this discussion. If is didn't have significant impact the first time it won't on the rehash. To my mind, better to focus efforts on limiting BushCo damage to America wherever possible, and keeping a weather eye out for similar behaviour in the now.
  • Monkeyfilter: sat there looking like an idiot, blinking Oh, you know, sometimes, the only thing left to do is laugh...
  • Fucking cunts. Bucky Gunts!
  • The hard part is, they like to keep the similar behavior a secret until it's a fait accompli. Then we all look like silly past-dwellers for opposing it.
  • I am so depressed.
  • 9-11.
  • -gives Ralph a hug-
  • Hmmm, can we levy a tax to rebuild the overtaxed levees?
  • This whole thing was foreseen in 1971 by Led Zeppelin in their briefing report entitled "When The Levee Breaks".
  • *smak*
  • Seriously, though...what else will it take for congressional Republicans to turn on this guy? His approval rating is already in the 30's. Surely he's an albatross around the neck of any congressman seeking re-election. When will they give him the well-deserved Nixon treatment and impeach him for the long-term good of their party? I don't follow the fine details of US politics, so what chance do the Dems have of gaining a majority this November? Is it even worth hoping for?
  • As I write this, the CBC is airing another rehash of this story and I am just sitting here fuming. That fucking asshole Bush. This is just a matter of the chickens finally coming home to roost. We knew six years ago the guy was just plain stupid, but somehow (and thanks to the fine people of Florida) he squeaked by on good-old-boy grins and aw-shucks bullshit. Well, eventually it had to catch up to him. Unlike Reagan, who wasn't exactly a thinker of Moynihanish proportions, Bush didn't hire smart people to be around him. He hired plain evil people like Cheney and Rumsfeld, ass kissing yes-men like Rice and Powell, and fellow idiots like Ashcroft and, yes, Brownie. And so the house of cards had to fall down sooner or later, and it is amazing and pitiful that it took this long for the majority of Americans to wake up to the fact that he is doing a piss ass job and literally ruining the country in the process. 230 years in the making and he's dismantling it in eight. Damn it!
  • -pats Ralph on the back- There, there. Now, let's go get the pitchforks and torches. -mob-
  • Seriously, though...what else will it take for congressional Republicans to turn on this guy? In this day and age, a lot. Used to be that parties would ostracize those who went out of bounds, even presidents (Nixon being the obvious example). But it's a PR world now, where the wagons must be circled and solidarity maintained even though they know wrong has been done (and no matter how they may justify it, I personally believe that an overwhelming majority of them feel that way). They get away with it in large part because of voter apathy. I and my countrymen simply have it too good, and are too concerned with our own lives. See also: tax cuts and hammering on abortion, gays, religion, and gun rights, their bread and butter out in the country. Personally, I think this administration has done far more harm to the Republic and to public trust than Nixon ever did, and if this were 1976 instead of 2006, he'd be out on his ass right now.
  • I want to see him take an IQ test. I think the world deserves to know his score. And I'm serious.
  • I would actually pay for that. What if someone were to start up a fund? Raise as much money as we can and offer it to Bush if he takes an IQ test. It would be fucking fantastic. It is really a win/win. If he takes the test, we know he will score low enough that many will take their own IQ tests and find out that they are smarter than the President (not to self: buy IQ test giving company prior to starting this project up). If he does not take the test, then I pocket the money. Win/win.
  • "No One Anticipated the Breech of the Levees" Nor did anyone expect the Spanish Inquisition!
  • No one EVER expects the Inquisition.
  • it took this long for the majority of Americans to wake up Ralph, what makes you think ANYONE'S awake out there? And those of us who are can't get a word in edgewise, between the lobbyists and the crooks in office drowning us out.
  • I'm scared of the world, can I leave now?
  • No. Finish your life cycle or no dessert.
  • "drowning us out"... was that an intentional pun?
  • Way to go with the southern depopulation! Next up, a catastrophic California earthquake that gets rid of those pesky hispanics!
  • Not to mention that we've all see how little good voting does.
  • MORD! Don't you accuse me of that disgusting punning.
