Online Archive of American Folk Medicine A searchable archive of folk medicine remedies. The entries are spare-looking, but the archive as a whole is a nice indicator of how far medical treatment has come. My personal favorites.

  • Condition: rheumatism Belief: Hard dry horse dung is good for rheumatism. Method Of Treatment: Apparently to be applied externally. Date Collected: 1950-1959 When it's that old, it's plenty hard and dry.

  • "To cure the gangrene caused by the breath of a toad, take a handful of dry rosemary which has been dipped in holy water used on Holy Saturday, and cook it for 15 minutes in a new pot. Pass the affected member over the vapor from the pot or apply compresses made from new cloth dipped in the water." Handy stuff! Actually, this is way cool. Great link.
